bouncing fuel needle!!

Post by Sloz »

66 912, the fuel needle moves to just above empty when i turn on the ignition.

Any ideas if it it the gauge or sender thats at fault?

The warning light works and comes on when its really low of fuel.

Thanks!

I reckon its the gauge, I have changed senders had still had the same problem, I never changed the gauge so I will never know the answer on that particular. car. If your sender is old, then change it anyway. A second hand gauge may have the same problem so will be pot luck. Your sender is working in the sense that the needle jumps and it makes the light come on, but I cant comment about the rest of its ability to work (i.e from empty to full). ONLY use VDO senders the URO stuff is junk. You can check the gauge by earthing the correct sender wire, but that wont help you with the bounce. I suppose its not impossible that with the dansk fuel tanks not having internal baffelling, that the fuel slosh when driving can make the gauge bounce, but as I general rule, I only use dansk tanks, and with the exception of a 67 911, I have not had the problem on any other car.
