Mad Cap: attic find
Seem to be on a nostalgic trip this last few weeks and suddenly remembered this little car.
Last used in compacted snow when my daughter was 8, then into the attic well wrapped up, found next to my immaculate Sinclair ZX 80 and 81.
She is now 32, and will die when she see's this again.
Absolutely bog standard with original charger and tool kit and instruction/build manual, the closest thing I have to a classic 'numbers-matching' car, so it will be worth a fortune.
Everything works.
Now with new batteries, readily available despite being circa 1989.
Still has it's crappy friction dampers but a real beauty.
Jog anyone's past at all?

Yes, I had the Tamiya 'Hornet' which was not a million miles away from that! I bought an after market motor and kept breaking the gears in the diff. I remember the gear set was £12 which seemed a lot at the time but quite a bit cheaper than a 915 rebuild!!

I ditched my BBC micro with all its peripherals recently but I am not sure why I still have my Apple LC and first PowerMac.
They will go to the tip eventually I guess.

These things should be kept as they are technically and socially important.
Those early ZX's, white and black, bought the dawn of a very new era to the masses.
The quality of the Mad Cap is very impressive.
From what I've read, tune them and the gearbox will break, the friction dampers are poor but the following for them is global.
Nice to have in this condition.

I do wonder whether you could use Macintosh to house a mac-mini etc with a modern LCD screen. Just for giggles

Lovely boat.
When in short trousers did the Pond Yatch thing at Bourneville Lakes (boat pond) in Bourneville, Birmingham, big boat, mast as tall as me x 2 and then some.
Wish I still had that in the attic..

Re: Mad Cap: attic find
NOOOOOO!!! Dont tip them. Please donate them to a local retro computer museum/charity if you can. There are loads around. I've given a load of my old Mac stuff to the retro computer museum in Leicester for example. There is a similar thing in Cambridge IIRC too. One in Manchester. So gotta be one in the south??? These places are more focussed on early home computers (and early games consoles) rather than business computers ie Sinclair ZX and C64 rather than IBM PC and its many clones/variants....jb wrote:What would you do with them?Jonny Hart wrote:Vintage Computers I wish I'd kept hold of:

Re: Mad Cap: attic find
I learnt to program on a ZX Spectrum. Which lead to me hacking the school's library computer to say "p155 off" whenever someone pressed a key. Then taking a Computing degree and becoming a programmer. Many happy memories of trying trying to load up a game from a cassette!

Re: Mad Cap: attic find
I have the Zx80 and 81 and after fighting them and the subject realised Computing was not for me and carried on with an old skool approach to Design of new products.
In the early 90's interviewed a young engineer who had never used a drg board.
These things changed and formed many people's outlook on 'Chips-with-everything' in the 80's.
Precious.
Surprised at the lack of reaction to RC cars!

Mind you I've also got a model sailer built to the 1m class regs, rather than the rather better Marblehead class. Sailed it a few times but never managed to compete it!
