Ever wondered how strong a Targa hoop is?

Post by KS »

Targa got 'lane changed' by an army truck and found out the hard way. Driver was OK...

Not quite sure what was going on with the paint...

Blimey I'd have thought there would have been more strength in the windscreen frame!

Back in 93 I put my SC Targa on its roof
Skidded on wet leaves in Novembr on a hair pin bend at 30 mph. Went sideways through a chevron sign (sharp bend type) pulling it & two posts with concrete on clear out the ground. Through the hedge behind and down a very steep bank into a ploughed field. By this time I was doing about 5mph sideways but as the bank was steep the car slowly rolled over into the mud. I was hanging in the seatbelt radio on, engine still running.
Turned the ignition off and climbed out
Damage was the passenger wing, door, sill, rear arch & floor as I went over through & over the sign
The roll bar & windscreen frame were perfect!
Got a local farmer to strop through the Fuchs wheels furthest from the road with tractor, flip it and drag the car up the bank onto the road.
I actually drove it home!

This is why I keep my 6 point motorsport roll cage in my Coupe!

Look how slender the screen frame is, and so too those of the BMW 2002 (etc), little wonder they collapse.

It's definitely USA from the fat overriders and the plate looks like Florida, although the plate on the Crown Vic looks like New Jersey. Anyway do you know if the engine and trans is for sale???

Its no surprise that the screen surround collapses like that, just look at the section of the A pillar / upright and compare to any modern car. Roof crush standards which may have applied to the vehicle at the time of first introduction ( FMVSS 216 ) were either non-existent ( if the SC and Carreras were homologated as derivatives of the original 1966 type ) or specified a very low resisting load compared to the current level.

Has the paint fallen off because the shell was galvanised?
