Socket of shift rod at the gear (sic!)

Post by 23e Heure »

I have already replaced my one of these with a standard nylon bush.

This brass one = a much better option....

Out of stock at 914-teile though... can anyone point me to an alternative source?

Thanks!

I haven't got one of these. What are they and where does it go?

You may have a standard plastic one, like this:

It's the shift rod bushing, at the transmission end of the shift rod, goes in the aluminium side shift console attached to the side of the gearbox.

Great, thanks. I've been slowly improving the shift and I think might help further!

Has anyone tried the tangerine shift bearing as well? I think this might offer further improvements

I bought one very similar looking from jwest a few years ago. But I bit the bullet and went for the complete kit !! Much much better. However now I have the room to change to a straight bar ! And it's improved it again massively!! It's either the straight bar or I had the patience or luck !! But I think any slop you can remove the better. Unless it's slop that you want !?? The tangerine full kit looks good.
But one thing confuses me with their drop down options: why is the rod straight for 6 option, and bent for 4?
Surely it should be the other way around?
Or am I missing something obvious??

My guess is that the 4 version has to be bent to pass through the engine mount bar. I'm not too familiar with the 6 but think they do the have such a bar so it down need to be straight?

I've got a rennshift on mine which made a big improvement but I'd just like it to be a bit better

.yes there is no engine mount to by pass

This was my original with the rose joints welded to it. And next too it is a tunnel shift bar which I had spare which with maybe half inch cut of was a perfect fit !! :)

There were three different linkages for the production 914.

The 914-6 linkage is straight.

Now there were two version for the 914-4, 70-72 rear shift and 73-76 side shift.

Due to the engine shape of the Type 4 engine the linkage bar can’t go in a straight line from the firewall to the gearbox.

The 70-72 rear shift bar is straight but had a short section at the fire wall that moved it to the left to clear the engine and went above the engine mount bar.

On the 73-76 side shift linkage it was bent to clear the engine and went through a hole in the engine mount bar on to a coupling like the 911 linkage has close to the firewall.
