Car history

Post by Merv »

A couple of us here in Australia are helping to sell an ex-SA (Transvaal) rally '58 coupe. It is owned by a very elderly gentleman in Australia who wants to sell as he can no longer drive. We are trying to obtain some provenance on the car for him. It was assembled in SA (CKD) and is original RHD.

It is in excellent condition but several features are different. The seats are extremely effective Hopkirk Rally seats (it was allegedly a 'team car'), the door trim in similar cloth and the dash and some other aspects show that there was a degree of local assembly/fitting. I am seeking any info on its rally history there, if possible? Is there an SA member who is an historian on these kinds of things? I have written to Mike Smith on this Board but not heard back as yet.

It was also owned by a South African Olympian (Townsend) in the last 80's.

The Vin is 102982

This car like others sold in South Africa at the time were CKD and assembled and trimmed in SA. They would normally have no factory Kardex and had a chassis number issued somehow from SA, it seems. However, I have not been able to get much clarity on this process so far. The practice would appear to have been stopped in the early 60's as the standard of trimming and fit out did not suit Porsche (see, e.g., seats, the dash pad and switches). Hence, my search to assist the current owner using the existing chassis number was not successful. The car was owned by at least two known people in SA and was later restored in Durban and the engine rebuilt with Mahle P & C's. The rally history was probably there in local events reported in Afrikaans. I have received good assistance from Mike, his colleague and from SA connections.

Still searching for information on this South African car, now in Australia. Have confirmed from the CoA that the Chassis number was indeed 102982 and the engine number 68919. Paint code was 601.

Any assistance appreciated. Merv

Hi Merv, Im having a similar issue tracking my SA cars history. I managed to get a Kardex copy from a man from the SA Porsche Club a few years back but that is all.
Mine was shipped 9/60 and sold by Lindsay Sakars of Johannesburg 11/60, it was silver with black interior but went back for extra work in 63. Thats all I could find. Good luck. If you get a contact that does help you track your car history it would be cool if he/she could find anything more about mine.
Regards,
Dave

Dave,

I expect you have already done this but S.Africa have what it seems a well formed Porsche Club and that includes a lot of interest in 356.

This first link might be worth looking at. You could join the club and ask questions. As of course Merv could do also.

I have another link for the 356 area and Lindsay is mentioned. Sure it goes back to 2003 but maybe these members might have some info. Sometimes they have info you can put into their club magazines.

I will post the next link directly.

Dave,

Further to my post above, I can advise the contact for the 356 register of S.Africa is as follows:

Peter@carreramotors.co.za

The link is shown down the bottom of this page: https://porsche356registry.org/clubs

Even Steve Wrights RHD 356A I seem to remember but could he wrong came from South Africa.

wow look what I just found http://www.classiccarsinrhodesia.co.za/ ... rsche.html
I doubt the white with red interior 356 B is mine back in the day but strange how mine has wing mirror holes on the wings and the lid had vents like a carrera.
Wish I could find more info about the Parker-weeks car like is it still about? Then I could confirm it aint mine.

So sorry Dave, the link did not work! I tried again no luck. I suggest you put the following in google:
Porsche 356 club South Africa. The scroll down around 3 pages to look at the 356 content. They seem very 356 involved over there to me.

Just a chance maybe but also reckon you have already done all that!

You guys have been busy! Thanks Roy and Dave. Mike Smith is also on the case. Ren's link above worked, but not sure if it is the same as Dave's (attempts  ). 102982 now here in Australia (1958A) was sold as original RHD by Lindsay Saker motors in SA and is a Kardex-carrying car built in Germany. The last three owners can be identified.

More on the car's history in rally or similar events is being sought. It certainly had a crash on the front LHS with a tree or similar and the wheel finished up in the passenger foot well. Extensive re-building of the front of the car in consequence.
