My 1973 Rhd E restoration (back to metallic green)

Post by vimal »

My restoration is underway.

After much deliberation and having initially deciding to postpone and drive the car for a while I had an opportunistic introduction to Richard Tuthill and decided to go for the resto after all

The rate of progress has been impressive.

I attach some links to drop box pictures - charting progress to date.

The car has been stripped and media blasted and is now at the metal work/fabrication stage. The shell was in reasonable condition - although a fair amount of new metal is needed. It will be moved on to a jig when the new metal is added.

yes - some interesting repair work in the past - all of this will be coming out.

The car was metallic green - which looks like an apple green. It will be going back to this as part of the restoration

I will post more pics as they come though.

A few more pics of my car - work has been progressing at a good rate - new wings, floor, bonnet, front end, doors and various other parts have been added over the past weeks. The list of panels needed has been growing as the patched up metal work, bad old repair work and rot has revealed itself. A new engine lid will be on its way in the new year. Not much of the old car left - but once committed there's no way back (and I will be doing this only once).

One very unpleasant discovery was a bearing failure in the engine - so an engine rebuild has been added to the list. Fascinating to see inside a 911 engine - but not ideal circumstances to do so.

Not too much good news so far but tuthills have been great and the thought of the end result is just about keeping me going. I also have a nice swatch of metallic green on my desk to remind me of that !

Having just done this myself (with advice from others on here) - I'd confirm that Photobucket is the way to go. It's a bit clunky but it's free - and once you've uploaded and selected a picture it'll give you the url to post into your thread.

Thanks to John at Tuthill for this - with helpful advice from Mike birtwistle. Seam sealing, liberal applications of por 15 and stone chip under the paint. Corrosion protection a must for me as this will be my regular driver
