I have a pair of cams from an engine used in motorsport. The cams have no identification marks or stampings on them. How can the cam profile be ascertained so that I can determine if they might be are suitable for road.
use?
Thanks,
Kirk

Re: Unknown Cam Profile
Kirk,
The best way is to find someone with a Cam Doctor but these are not common and quite costly.
You can install them in dummy carriers with heads fitted and then measure the profile from actual valve opening.
You could just measure the cam with a DTI but translating this to a real profile is quite difficult due to changing rocker ratio.
measuring the lift is easy, just measure the diameter of the base circle and subtract this from the measured cam nose and multiply by maximum rocker ratio - (1.46 for a standard rocker)
I think you can also estimate the lobe centre angle from the Right Hand Cam and these two numbers may give you a good guide to the cam type.

These guys will be able to help with that:
http://www.newman-cams.com/contact.html
They'll also make replacements to spec as a one off if necessary.
