1971 911 T Il Cacciatore

Post by Diecastinvestor »

Having been inspired by all the restoration posts on this site I have decided to start my own project and share my ups and downs of Porsche restoration as I return this recently acquired 1971 911 T back to its former glory.

The car has been nicknamed Il Cacciatore which is Italian for the hunter as a tribute to a great friend who is no longer with us. He was car mad and his knowledge of motorsport was phenomenal and if it wasn’t for him I would still be reading about restoring cars rather than taking a risk, buying one and getting on with it. He was inspirational and this is a tribute to him for all the advice over the years.

This project has been under starters orders for quite some time. I have had had a few modern Porsches and my daily driver is a 2007 Gen 1 997 C4S which I have had since new. My quest for a classic Porsche started when I found the DDK website and started reading the restoration threads and it was my old mate Steve who told me to stop talking about it and find one. Sadly he never got to see this project get off the ground.

Over the past year a number of potential projects have come and gone, some better than others but with a full nut and bolt restoration being planned there was no point paying over the odds for anything half done. Eventually I found a chap on eBay who appeared to have a fairly regular supply of cars and with good feedback I eventually decided to bid on the car which is now the subject of this post. Although partly disassembled it looked fairly solid and it was at least matching numbers however it failed to reach its reserve. Having been in regular contact with the vendor during the auction I was sure there was a deal to be done, money changed hands and now the car is mine and on its way across the pond due for delivery on the 30th December 2014.

Once the car arrives the plan is to carry out a full nut and bolt restoration and I will be providing updates as we go along. I will be outsourcing where necessary (which is a lot) and doing what I can myself. The standards that other people have set with other projects are incredibly high and hopefully this thread won’t disappoint.
I have posted a few photos to give you a taster of what I will be working with once Il Cacciatore arrives.
Until next time………..

Interesting pictures. Someone has had a bit of a nibble at the car already and raided some of the nicer bits.
Groovy dash board!

Looks to be an interesting re-build, will you DIY it?

The plan is to go back to original, the flares will have to go straight away.
Many thanks

So I have now sorted out the issues with the CoA which said it was a targa not a coupe. This has been a massive concern having bought the car unseen. Given the two tone paint work I thought it might have been converted. I managed to contact the previous owner who knew the complete history of the car. It transpires I am only the 3rd owner. The first owner was Porsche and they used it as a staff car. It was then sold to an american who used it as a daily driver during the 70's and early 80's who was teaching in Germany. When he went back to the US he shipped the car home where it then ended up in a garage for 10 years. It was then purchased by the work colleague who told me all this with the intention of restoring it. As is often the case the project was started and died a death and was left in the garage again for another 10 years or so which bring us up to the current period.

Thankfully everything now rings true. Looking forward to finally seeing the car at the end of the month.
Many thanks

Nick

Very nice to sort the history, and 3rd owner is superb, I am my 911's 13th owner...

It will be interesting to see how the shell is having been off the road for so long. Was it stored well or badly do you know?

All I know is that it was dry stored. The floor pans look pretty good just a small whole in the pedal box area. Until it's stripped you never know what you are going to get.
Many thanks
