Anybody on here collect posters?

Post by neilbardsley »

I made the mistake of asking about a poster from this web site

http://vintageautoposters.com/

I clearly had no idea how much they cost. In the chaps defense I found someone else selling the same one for more! Anybody on here collect posters? Do they have a half life since they were really only made to last for a bit? I found a copy of the poster, I asked about, for £2. I think I might resort to searching car boots and rumble sales :)

Collect, no
Have a few, yes. Mostly airline/travel as they look great around the house (and cheaper than some of the stuff she wants to buy)

They are scarce precisely because they were made to be used and thrown away after the event. But sites like the one you link, for example, mean that anyone who finds one in their loft is likely to avoid the car boot and whack it on eBay. There's billions on there but sorting wheat from chaff, original from copy is really tough. My wife used to work with this chap... talk about pricey

As a cheaper option, try Pullman Editions. Not cheap but perhaps cheaper, a limited edition and a known quantity/quality.

I'd love to get hold of a couple of the Credit Suisse vintage car posters, such as the one they did for Goodwood, but I see them in magazines etc but I've not seen one as a poster.

As Tosh says, I have a few around the house but I'm quite happy with repro's often on different substrates than the original paper. I've always liked turn of the century industrial/commercial/cubism inspired art especially Cassandre, also vintage UK rail stuffcan be really classy.

http://www.allposters.co.uk/ isn't bad for repro stuff especially if you go through their special offers.

Also I'm a tight arse so often try and scour the internet for a hi res image and print out myself on canvas on my large format studio printer at work. I can then have it the exact size I want and mount it how I want.

I've tried that before but it's hard finding the hi res image :)

Yup, there isn't much out there so you can't be too fussy. :)

Clearance stuff here though that suits my tightness

Neil, I have a small Martini based collection and Tony at Vintage Auto Posters has sourced a couple for me, he's very knowledgeable and a helpful guy.

Be aware though that this is an expensive hobby, original posters are very collectable but also they can be fragile, so you do have to factor in their
restoration and upkeep if necessary, and if you are displaying them they do need conservation framing which again is very expensive.

Restoration can be just be light cleaning to full linen backing for posters that are coming apart, and the framing needs to use mounts and backing
boards with the correct ph levels and UV filtering glass. To give you an idea, I've just had a pair done this week and it was over £500.

Original movie posters for instance are incredibly collectable and very expensive, I always lusted after an original Lawrence of Arabia until I read that
the last UK quad size to sell at auction made £13,200 and that was in 2005! I'm having my 'Battle of Britain' original framed at the moment, it's an
iconic piece of film artwork where the 'trail' behind the Spitfire is the Union Jack that's wrapped around the German flag trail of a Messerschmidt.

It's been folded instead of rolled for many years so here the problems are of getting it flat bearing in mind you can't dry mount them. So the creases
will be part of it's look but the glass will have to be spaced from the poster as it mustn't touch.

Gregor Fisken is known by many as a top end classic car dealer but he is also an avid Poster collector, his dedicated web-site makes interesting reading

Hope that helps.
cheers, Mike.

Thank Mike that is useful

I think that I'm spending enough money on the cars so probably not for me.

I've been collecting Le Mans advertising posters which are issued each year for quite some time. The late ones are easily bought for not much money on ebay, but the early ones are becoming very difficult to find. They also do a sticker each year, I also collect those.

The one that caught my eye was an early Le Mans poster but as you said "difficult to find" or lots of money :)
