O/T..So, bought a 996 Turbo

Post by Burma-Shave »

Well, I fancied something a bit more modern for the school run, a bit less salt sensitive and, probably because I am a big soft girl, airbags. I have a fair few jobs to do on the 964 and also want to give it a bit of a rest now its 25 years old.

I wanted it to be a 911 but didnt want depreciation or a blown engine. I wanted it to be non shouty, because the 964 is actually a bit shouty with its exhaust bypasses and race seat. I could stretch to about 20k. So a 996TT was the answer, obvz!

Recommended by the cognoscenti (PMJT, Hot66, 210bhp) AND the trade ("its still got a bit of feel like pet, and it won't shite itself tomorra" - guess who).

So I travelled to the depths of Norfolk in January and picked up a standard lapis blue over graphite manual coupe from a nice chap who took a low offer on ebay. An extremely short notice but positive PPI from the very very helpful chaps at Autowerke of Norwich, and a very very long drive home. The owner even loaned me his Tom Tom so I could get the hell out of Diss, isnt that nice?

The good bits are that it is much prettier in the flesh than in photos (really took my breath away when I first saw it), it feels very compact and has great front end grip but keeps that 911 patter, and is nice and sharp not as soft as I was expecting. And so it is very nice to belt along the lanes and A roads. And it has the original Nokia 5110 with its plumbed in handsfree kit! Very 1999…

Oh yes, and it is dead fast.

The downsides are yes it is a bit plasticky inside, the doors thwump shut unsatisfyingly, and it appears to be powered by a swarm of reasonably polite bees. And the speed is delivered in such a civilised and composed way, as is often described, that it actually is more as if everyone else is just driving really slowly, rather than me having fun driving a bit quick. So, its a bit too easy to become a frustrated nerk who is zooming everywhere and overtaking and shouting oh, COME ON PEOPLE. Its also the first time that I have had a car that 10 tenths is actually truly dangerous, in all but a minority of situations anyway.

But overall it fits the brief nicely! And the lovely Hagerty have let me include it in the 356/964 policy. If anyone is thinking about it, I would say do it..

Must..not..modify. Seriously, how can 420hp not be enough? More noise might be good, but need to keep reminding myself I bought this to be civilised and professional. Ha ha.

Indeed. I got the train out of London and with every successive stop, the proportion of normal-looking people in the carriage dropped! The satnav took me down some pretty bizarre roads too...

Very nice. I was seriously considering a 996 turbo then my employer has suddenly clamped down on their previously unenforced rule that our company cars must be under 7 years old. And there went my hopes of having a 996 turbo as a company car. Bought a newer Volvo instead last week.

My next thought was replace the missus's hot hatch with one but she only wants one if the pushchair will fit in it. I gave up at that point.

So are the engines better on the 996 turbo because they are derived from the 993 engine or something like that?

GT3 and turbo engines are dry sump. So do not suffer from the IMSB failures.

Kind regards.

The 996 uses a sealed ballbearing. The gt3 / turbo have a proper oil fed bearing instead

Yes, that chat (that I don't really fully understand) is that it is a completely different unit to the regular 996 engine, which has a variety of issues including the IMSB wotsit - and that it is effectively a detuned version of the Le Mans going GT1 engine. Thats what I am going to tell people down the pub anyway :P

It uses the 'bullet proof' (ironic laughter…) 964 bottom end designed by Hans Mezger, so it avoids all the intermediate drive, case chunking, and Rear Main Seal problems endemic to the 9*6/9*7s.

However ,just because the engine won't self-destruct doesn't mean a 996t will be a cheap car to run.

Very nice, and a great performance bargain at the moment.

Its worth having a look under the car if you can, the Turbo/GT's do have some corrosion problems.
