More SVA comments.
I ve spoken to an SVA centre today and the DVLA ref SVA, not good news really.
The cars fall into a few categories;
Kits and Conversions - can keep age related plate - but require SVA
Radical conversions - can keep plate no SVA, but cover things like trikes and alike.
however cars like the speedster being that they have been shortened (chassis) they are only entitled to a Q plate!
not chuffed....

Surprised to hear mention of a Q plate. Normally only issued where the origin of the car components are uncertain, and a speedster is usually based pretty much on a single car.
Looked at the detail in the DVLA website here:
http://www.dvla.gov.uk/vehicles/regrebil.htm
Category D, kit conversions appears to leave scope for a shortened chassis and keeping an age related plate??
D. Kit Conversions
This is where a kit of new parts is added to an existing vehicle or old parts are added to a kit comprising a manufactured body/chassis/monocoque bodyshell. The general appearance of the vehicle will change and result in a revised description on the registration document/Certificate.
A vehicle will retain its donor registration mark if either the original unmodified chassis or unaltered monocoque bodyshell and two other major components are used.
If a new monocoque bodyshell or chassis from a specialist kit manufacturer is used (or an altered chassis/bodyshell from an existing vehicle) together with two major components from a donor vehicle, an age related mark will be assigned. The mark will be based on the age of the donor vehicle. An ESVA/SVA/MSVA test will be required to register the vehicle.
Where there are insufficient parts from a donor vehicle or in cases where the original registration mark is unknown, an ESVA/SVA/MSVAcertificate will be required to register the vehicle and a 'Q' prefix registration number will be allocated.

I think for most speedster replicas, the issue is whether a shortened chassis constitutes a modified chassis.
The following may be interesting:

The way I see it at the moment, if we can convince the DVLA that a shortened bug chassis is unmodified, we can avoid the SVA.
Let mw know what you think, I suggest we all work together on this

Q Plates
I have just had my Pilgrim body delivered (Very excited !!
I spoke to the delivery chap, who is also Pilgrims storeman about whether their demonstrator that has passed SVA had been issued with a Q plate. He said that it had been issued with an age related plate.

When i told the DVLA about the "slight body modification"
i attempted to change it from a VW beetle saloon to a M&W speedster on the log book, they chucked it back saying "NOno no, it is still a Beetle" (this was about '98. so i thought okay its a beetle. i'm sure the ploice would understand if ever they did a check on the reg if and when i got stopped (not that i ever have). so i went with it and that was waht it is reg as. oh today i have received all my bits (paperwork) back from the DVLA and thet gave me some SVA forms and are telling it 100% has to have SVA.
