Targa hardtops?
Hey, nobody laugh but I've a Question for Barry I suppose! Anni would
love a targa but I'm worried about the top getting slashed etc. Did Porsche ever make a hard top or can one be fabricated? fibreglass or metal? Doo-able?

I had a 72 targa and also had an oem hardtop , or so I was led to believe - my targa ended up upside down and I was amazed how well the folding top fared
though
the hard top was very substantial and heavy though
I still love targas and the chap who bought my early hard top customised it to fit a 3.2 and said it was great and so there may be some out there

I don't think Porsche made a factory hard top for early cars. But as said they are available after market. Getting them to fit properly will be your challenge, but do-able with someone like Barry to figure it out. You might be better to get one with a folding top which has a good frame and get a glassfibre top fabricated on it. The vinyl cover is a pretty simple shape so can't see why you couldn't do that.
You won't regret buying a Targa and the kids would love it!
Good luck with your search Mike - sure there is a silver lining in this for you.

Mike,
I had one on my '75 Carrera Targa.
Made only in '74 and '75 MY - not many made.
Agree - VERY heavy !
They had a very different latching system to the normal folding top.
They would have been effective in cold/snow climates.
These days they would be a 'hens teeth' item to find !
Cheers.
Dennis.

hard top targa
I have a kaminari hard top made from carbon fibre. I bought it as a project to put on my car and have never got around to doing it. I bought it off a guy in the US with a targa frame and shipped it back to Germany. The top is fixed to the targa frame but is terribly done and needs re mounting. Looks cool when I placed it on my car, but I think my car has a bit of flex and the top would need some extra fabrication to make usable for my particular car.
Ideally the entire top needs the mounting points filled and then re fix it to the frame, so if you are handy with a little resin and have a good weekend to faff about this top maybe of interest. They say in the directions that it is an easy job that can be done in a few hours, yeah right.
I did come across a US hardtop targa top on Ebay.US, supposedly from the factory, looked great but the auction ended as there was a death and was never reposted and never seen again. They do exist but they are a s rare as rocking horse poo.
email me if you want a couple of photos.
