Third brake light

Post by Jez 356 »

Dear all

I remember reading about a thrid brake light installed in the engine lid. It was very discrete and used one of these LED strips which in the dark lit up the engine grill quite well in the photos.

I can not find this information anywhere and I was also wondering if anyone had done a third brake light on their 356 in the UK?

Anything to protect the back end of the car is worth looking at!

All the best

356 Registry

Post by Jez 356 »

I am sure there was a story in the 356 Registry and have seen some very well priced LED strips for thrid brake lights on evilbay but thought I would check with you guys if there was a particularly good application that had been tried and tested. If I can find the story I will post it here.

All the best

3rd brake light

Post by Jez 356 »

Here is a site that looks quite good which several options for where to locate the 3rd brake light

http://thirdbrakelight.blogspot.com/

I prefer the under the grill option as the best and maintaining originality.

LED string

Post by Jez 356 »

I have bought a £5 24cm length of red LEDs which I plan to wire up to the brake system and see if they can then be fitted into the rear grill.

They should be bright enough to work as a third brake light and also they are weather proof

I will let you know how it goes!

great stuff - definitely interested in hearing how it goes - I want to do similar. Did you get the LEDs from ebay? Is your car 6 volt?

Ebay

Post by Jez 356 »

Yes I got the LEDs on Ebay

They seem to have then been posted from China

They look OK in the box! I will test it first to see if they work ok

I have a 12v car and on the box it does say for 12v cars only but i am sure there sare options for both 6v and 12v

I will of course let you all know how I get on

Wiring

Post by Jez 356 »

I have now got the LED 3rd brake light in place under the grill

I have tested it and it will certainly help but will not be obvious in the grill when not in use.

Can anyone tell me a good way of getting the 2 wires up to the brake sender at the front of the car so that I can wire it in?

I would like it to go through the tunnel so I suspect a very long stiff wire or something like that would be needed to pull the electrical wires through?

Any tricks of the trade would be appreciated!

Many thanks in advance!

^^^ Thats what I'd do - go from the back of the car, dont need to go through the tunnel again - would be interested to see a pic of the LEDs :)

Isn't the indicators on the same supply wire so the third brake light would flash when the indicators were operated..

Hi Jez,

On the loom in my car ('59 coupe) there is a spare black cable which goes from the ignition switch area to the engine compartment . I have used it for my oil pressure gauge but would do fine for a brake light with a little extension. It was originally for the 2nd coil on the Carrera I think.

Thanks guys

I will watch out for that

There do seem to be several wires looking redundant when you have a good look around although under the dash is like spagetti junction!

Hopefully I will get this done at the end of the week

Jez
How did your third brake light project go in the end? Which wiring route/option did you use in the end?
