Switch to the darkside!

Post by liam 914 »

Made the decision and have switched to the darkside!
Sold my 2L engine and replaced it with a 2.2 Subaru engine. Will go for the first drive on Thursday, can't wait. Also fitted a two speed heater from a mini so heating and screen demisting actually works :P
Will post a full report and pics ASAP.
Oh and for those wondering why I didn't go WRX... well whats the point of not being able to floor it through corners without spinning. Anyway now all the hard work is done, I can easily switch later on.
Anyone else done this conversion over here or is it just the Yanks?

Good choice of engine, its a route i am seriously thinking about going especially as my dad is about to sell his subaru and less then the price of an engine on evilbay!

Did you do all the work or if not who did the conversion?

Post up lots of pics please.

People now dry-sump the Impreza engines.

Great engines, my hillclimb/road car ran 370 bhp all external mods...

I paid £600 for a Legacy with 75,000 on the clock. All necessarys were stripped and I will sell what's left for scrap. The sump has been cut and reweilded and customised to fit and a custom engine mount. The guy who has done the work has done loads of these conversions for VW's and really knows his stuff. It will rev to 7,000rpm before the limiter cuts in. The only thing I need to do is get a new rev counter to fit in place of the old one.

Photos have been taken throughout the build and I will post a full thread when I pick the car up on Thursday.

Liam love some of the posts on volkszone!!!

I have to say I now have a problem as you have planted the seed for my own conversion especially as my dad is about to trade in his subaru forrester and has been offered just £500. Low mileage car and i know the history!!

Oh what to do!

Go on do it. I'll give you fifty quid for your old engine

Liam - where have you placed the radiator, etc. Have you lost much boot space (at either end)?

I looked at the Forrester quad cam myself and decided against it for two reasons. Firstly, the EJ220 I have used was cheaper £600 for the whole car to take everything I needed. Secondly, the quad cam is a bigger, heavier engine and more difficult to fit. We decided that all together the performance would be about the same and not necessarily worth the extra hassle/cost. Still, if you can get the whole car for £500, then it is probably a pretty good bet. Once I have the car back, I will let everyone know exactly how it turns out. Have to say the guys who have done the work have so far have been great with trying to keep the costs down, their communication and speed of work. I will put all their details in the build thread.

Radiator is located in the front boot and believe I still have some space in there! It is possible to fit a low profile radiator but is a touch more pricey. We have used one from a Renault Clio so was cheap as chips.[/img]

David- was a bit blunt on Volkszone I admit  but had to defend myself! To me the conversion is a no brainer, especially since I spent a fortune with Tuthills trying to sort out a nippy car and was left seriously wanting. Just wish I'd done this before and saved all that cash.

Hoping someone on here can help me with my rev counter conundrum. I'd really like one that can fit directly in place of the original rather than having a new one stuck on the dash and a redundant one in the guage cluster. Ideas please guys...
