Alloy framed ducktail identification?
I've been told several times that my ducktail is a genuine alloy framed item. Can anyone tell me how I can positively identify that it definitely is? Any visual clues, shape of the frame\slam part? (it weighs 7.5kg)

For a start, if it has an aluminium frame (as opposed to steel) then there is a high chance of it being an original RS ducktail.
Those fitted to later Carrera RS models, '74 2.7 Euro Carreras & some aftermarket versions were steel-framed but most aftermarket ones are all-fibreglass.

Yes, looks correct to me too. Nice result.
I've got an original steel framed one but it's not brilliant (bit rusty along the bottom edge) and that cost plenty. Yours should be worth good money.
I'll have to weigh my steel framed one and see what the difference is...

A long time ago I swapped a steel plain engine cover for a GRP ducktail from a well known 911 restorer.
The duck tail turned out to have an alloy frame... which being uninformed and impetuous I removed to save weight. It could have been real !!!! Finally the shell had been so badly repaired it was essentially scrap. I still have the shell or the remains of it which one day I will use to make a buck to mould a really light ducktail.
Move forward a few years and I have an alloy framed tail to repair from a real RS . I cannot believe how badly the alloy frame has corroded and how generally poorly it is constructed. Soda blasting the GRP to alloy joint has revealed that the alloy frame was simply sat in a big puddle of resin and chopped mat which cured before it was all faired in with resin and very fine fibre chopping.
On the one I am doing I will have to carefully remove the frame and clean up the shell before rebonding the frame on polyurethane to ensure that no future surface corrosion can set in to compromise the joint again.
Then I will replicate the original edge and latch jointing method but only in cosmetic terms since all the strength will be in the poly..
Don't get me started on the front spoiler I'm doing for the same car....

rs tail
Thought you might like some images of the RS tail I just seperated frome its alloy frame. The whole thing was de-bonded and had been really badly repaired in the past so I'm making the best of a bad job here. The dents and holes are not my work
I hope I am illustrating the fixing detail discussed earlier but tell me if I'm wrong.
Now the frame is separate I can repair as far as poss! then it will be re bonded using sika flex before being faired in using a GRP tissue base over the alloy to lid interface and a glass loaded fairing past that will move but not crack. I aim to make it look and behave as god as new ready for the painter to get years of respray off before refinishing it inside and out.

rs tail and spoiler
Here is the RS spoiler and tail I am working on.
The spoiler was really badly damaged and crazed through after lots of knocks and poor repair. It also has nearly 3mm of paint on it in places which will have to be removed before refinishing.
The oil cooler blank panel was wrecked so I've reconstructed it ready for a skim of epoxy and refinish at the painters. I also had to re manufacture the side brackets and spotlamp reinforcement pieces. These will be pop rivetted into place with Sika Flex adhesive before glassing over as the original. I have yet to make the big brackets for the main connections.
I have finished stripping the alloy ducktail frame and revealed some damage due to poor repair previously and a hand fabricated lock support . Still its all part of the cars history so I suspect it will remain as found but re assembled better.
