Anyone help id the connectors on my new regulator from PRS?

Post by Burma-Shave »

Hi folks
I know its a technical query, but general chat gets more traffic, and I am itching to get this done today - its glorious out there!
(Sorry, moderators  )

S0 - I am replacing my 12V black box voltage on the 356 with a generic brass one this weekend, but unfort only one of the connectors on the new reg are labelled!

Pics on this thread on 356 registry

but I wondered if anyone in the UK has had one of these from PRS and could confirm what connects where?

OK, looks like its just the same as the VW type 1/old 356 regulator..(obvious to experienced people and vee-dubbers, but not me!) - but still not sure why the B+ has two connectors, one on top of each other..despite trawling google.
Hmm, which to choose..

Help me, people..!

Hi Johnny.

There are three wires coming from the dynamo.
big white/yellow wire = Earth and should go to earth on the regulator.
Big red wire = D+ this is the charge wire which is putting the volts into the regulator.
Small black wire = DF this is the field wire and goes to DF or F on the regulator.

You should then have two connections on the other side of the regulator.
One should say B+....I think there are two of these on the after-market regs..I think there are two for twin charging systems on some vw campers.
This B+ is the voltage going back to the battery after it has been regulated.
The other connection on this side of the reg is the field wire going to put the light out on your dash board.

Any problems, give me a ring on 07811 400644 anytime..

Hi Paul, nice to hear from you, thanks for the help.

My main problem was that none of the connectors are labelled or marked in any way on the new regulator, except D+, and they are all in different places compared to my old reg, so I was a bit lost!

I think I have got it figured out though:

On the new reg

Bottom left: D+
Bottom left (Underneath): D- (a.k.a. Ground)
Top left: DF (a.k.a Dynamo Field)

Bottom right - '61' (a.k.a. red light on dash)
Top right - B+ (a.k.a. Battery)

Image

Top right Battery connector has 2 spades close to each other- both the images of connected regulators I have found have been connected via the lower of the two, but it probably doesnt matter if they are just for twin charging systems like you say? (They kind of look like they go different places on the regulator, which is why I was nervous..)

Thanks very much for the offer to phone - I'll maybe give you a call tommorrow if I'm stuck. Cant fit it today now anyway as I've not got a big beefy spade connector for B+ (the ones I have are too little, and the connectors on the old reg were all screw-on)

Another day at 356 school... 8)

Thanks Mick, had a look but unfortunately the site doesnt confirm the connections. If anyone wants to reassure me that I have got them identified right, feel free!

(and no one'll notice its Taiwanese once I stick a Bosch sticker on it.. )

Red light off! Woo-hoooo!
Its only been about a year.. (actually the dash seems a bit dull without it).

But now I have loads of engine noise picked up on the blaupunkt - more noise with more revs, never had it before, makes it unlistenable..does this happen with some aftermarket regulators?
