Fan Restoration

Post by 1972_911t »

Ive just had my engine fan blasted to remove all the corrosion and its come up pretty good. I now intend to paint it for preservation, is there any particular paints or primers that are good for preventing corrosion in magnesium or will any std primer do.

fan restoration

Hi, i was told to warm the fan up before painting, it will help the paint adhere to the fan, you dont want the paint coming off as the fan belts round. Mine was sandblasted as well. i then just used 2 pack primer and paint. Hope this helps

There is a really nice coating that Neil bainbridge has done on Mikes fan.

I think JohnM has just done his using the same technique

All I have done to my fan is cleaned it ( with an abrasive brush  ) ... I will probo get it finished like Johns one day, but I have started to realise I'm too lazy to keep my engine bay looking clean & shiney .

I have actually just checked through all my photos & I realise I have nver taken any of my engine

Next time the car is out of the carcoon I'll snap a photo

Hi

Yes mine was done using the same process as mikes, it is not a paint but a surface treatment, also when you media blast the mag fan you need to use a non metallic bead as any ferrous material can bed its self into the soft mag, and this can rust or oxidise.

Also the pulley needs to be riveted back onto the fan.

James I hope you were not hinting that my cars a garage queen!!

Hi,

Removing the centre piece and having the fan chromated as John as Mike has shown is a great way to go.

Another option is to vapour blast them leaving the centre section in place. In the second picture the centre section has been painted to give the "effect" of the original zinc finish.

Hi Alan

How difficult is it to replace the rivets if you remove the centre piece? does it require any special tools?

this is an interesting one. The original RSR's had a special waxoly type coating on the mag fan, presumably instead of paint to keep it light. Here's a guy in the State's version on his wonderful rep (apart from the carbs, oh and the fan shroud and housing, and chain boxes........) recreated in paint

I just bought an original fan housing + fan. All I have done so far is to clean it with dishwashing liquid and polish it a bit. It showed no sign of old paint.

Were these things originally painted?

I just thought of applying a bit of wd40 onto it before installing it.

Here are pictures before and after the cleaning and polishing:

Re Mike's posting about the waxoyl finished fan. The fan in the photo's looks to me like it is a GRP fan, I know for sure that a GRP fan was used on the 917 flat 12's, possibly also on racing flat 6's?

I know on later porsche's porsche sprayed the undersides of the engine with tectyl which is like siilar to waxoil but not as soft, alot of the engine builders in the US use this on the old mag cases to stop them corrodeing. Maybe this is what the RSR fan is covered in?

I was in contact with the owner earlier this year (I was trying to buy his car, but he wouldn't sell) and it is a mag fan painted with translucent paint to replicate the RSR factory finish.
cheers, Mike.
