Meagsquirt EFI on a 2.2T - Real time data view with iPad

Post by Gary71 »

Thought I would start a thread detailing (over the months!) my transition from the now burnt out Zeniths to a megasquirt EFI system with individual coils.

I must credit Tim (impmad2000) and Ian (ian donkin) as bad influences together with my friend the 'Fease' and another 'Sal'. All of which should know better and advise me to stick with carbs, but hey, that would be boring wouldn't it!

I plan to switch the car to megasquirt ignition control first and then make the leap into the unknown that is fuelling.

Spark will be via Ford EDIS6 and fuel will be via Triumph triple throttle bodies. This may not work!!! They were cheap though...

These are on their way back the UK as we speak and I need to do some more research in the Megasquirt ECU itself and the Ford bits.

Image

They look good as they come with fuel rail, tps, pressure regulator etc.

Check out this thread that started me thinking.

Excellent stuff Gary, you know it makes sense. I'll pop one or two other bits in the car for when I see you Saturday.
Cheers

I admire your desire to make this work. I think it can work and be a good alternative for these old cars of ours. 8)

Sooner or later our kind of cars will have to meet more stringent emission tests :( if we want to share the roads with more green motors of the future. :flower:

Cheers for the support Derek :) All my friends think I'm slightly mad. The 'map' is the going to be the single hardest part, it's going to make any hardware and wiring issues look completely trival. Getting it to run is one thing, getting a map that approaches a modern car in terms of driveability, hot start, cold start etc is quite another and probably way outside the scope of my tuning ability.

Still it was never exactly perfect on Zeniths, so if I can get to that level then I will feel fairly pleased with myself 8)

Gary,
Two of my cars, the beetle and 914 (daily drivers) run twin carbs with no choke cables for cold starts.

Every day starts with a "is this a two pumps of the throttle or three" moment before ignition.

Mega Squirt has got to be better than this

Every day with high ambient temps is a pain in the ??? as is every freezing morning.

I know your 911 isn't a daily? :( driver but it could be! :)

Ahh yes, it's 0 deg C hence it's a seven pump day!

Brendan encountered the 'is it a hot start or has it cooled down enough for a pump or two' moment in the Channel Tunnel... A few nervous moments followed, with some slightly annoyed traffic waiting behind us as we cranked!

Having known you more years than I can remember, this is the craziest thing I thing you have done since spinning around a gravel carpack using the handbrake to attack the corners, I remember lifting your car off that post all too well...... :banghead:

just remeber the food on the table for the little uns, before you go too far down the road of no return,

the cost of a well set up Zenith will not be quite as much as that rolling road and engine dyno that you have been looking for on EBAY!!

Of course if it works, I always knew would do it :albino:

Thanks Tim!

I'll pm you my address.

I assume you need to apply a calibration factor to these in the setup to match them to the default GM sensors?

They are actually very close, and since the MS works to relative calculations, the absolute value is not too significant, only from a Human interface point of view.... But I'll check and do a new Thermistor curve if neccessary anyway.
Cheers

Gary

If you get stuck for any bits, I have most stuff awaiting a bash at this once personal circumstances are more resolved:

2 x GSXR600 throttle body assemblies (just in case the Triumph jobbies don't do it for you)

1 x Complete EDIS6 stuff (coil pack, trigger wheel, EDIS module, VR sensor)

and if it all gets too complicated (or it's not going to be ready in time for the Northern weekend and you have to make it for that, right?)...

1 x Pair Zenith Carbs, manifolds and linkages

Happy to lend you whatever you need if you get stuck - just let me know.

As an aside, it's kind of comforting to know your silver flying machine will not be terrorising the quiet country lanes of Cheshire for a week or two
