Hello,
Could somebody tell what should I give a look at before buying a new gearbox.
How can i be so sure it comes from a 912?
How can i know that good restoration has been undergone?
What should be a fair price for one restored (in italy) and now in mint condition?
Best regards,
Adrian
912 from 1965 gearbox questions?
Hello, Adrian.
I do not think you can be sure of the origin of a particluar box, short of finding the number in the Factory Kardex..
The impression is that originally, the 902 numbers were often but not always fitted: this particular detail has not been recorded in any of the reference books I know of.
I'm also afraid there is no way to actually check the box without opening it up I'm afraid.
A fully rebuilt 901 with all new wearing parts, but old gears and shafts will have cost 1500 -2000 gbp in parts, plus labour.
So there should be receipts for this sort of money.
By way of example, a car I had came with a receipt from a very reputable builder ( Robert Gant) for 2,600 for the gearbox rebuild.
A gearbox with no receipts or attributable rebuild history is worth as much as the trust you place in the vendor.
It might be 200 or 1200 pounds..
Kind regards
David

Gearbox parts are mighty expensive for a 901 box - I remember being quoted £500+ just for the bearings - and yes I did try getting them matched but kept getting the same answer - only from Porsche.
