Rolling road at JZ

Post by veryporky »

Thinking of taking my 2.7 for a rolling road session with Steve McHale at JZ Machtech now the rebuilt motor is fully run in. The compression is bumped to 9.5:1 so to set the timing accurately I feel it really needs a dyno run. Anybody else taken their mechanical injection 911 there? The common consensus is that MFI needs an expert hand so I just wondered how it was for you. Super, average, complete waste of time? Please PM me if you do not want your opinion made public.

Many thanks,
Keith

Steve's done my MFI twice. First time about 6 weeks after I bought the car in 2004, I wanted a full service done to find out what was wrong with it.

I took it back there recently and had it set up again, cost me £300.

He hnows what he;s doing but if you have a problem with bills running away then make sure they call you. Quoted me £80 odd for a dyno then when the bill appeared they said they'd spent 4 hours sorting out the cold start

Steve has the experience to do these engines to perfection.......sometimes reckon he does nt really need to use the road. Re the costs ,must be hard to estimate time on a job like this , never found them to be excessive , have found their pricing fair

Hello there.

The factory MFI manual does not suggest the use of a rolling road at all, FWIW.

All the basic settings are done with normal test instruments..

Kind regards

they'd spent 4 hours sorting out the cold start
Which then leaked and sprayed fuel all over the side of your engine bay at Le Mans...getting residue on the points and causing a breakdown... actual and almost mental

Not meant as criticism though, I've always heard good things about their work before. :)

Gary, that was my fault. I changed all the cold start pipes and the shop gave me one 10mm clip by mistake. I didn't notice and it leaked. When I got back from Le Mans I changed it for a 9mm clip. JZ Machtech investigated my cold start trouble and fixed the solenoid, relay etc. then set up the MFI. I asked for a Dyno to see what power the car was putting out, I think for setting the MFI they only use the CO2 meter.

JZ is one thing but I hear very good noises from the direction of RSR engineering (Russel Lewis)?

I would set the car up completely as per factory manual to see what she is packing and see how much she puts out on the rolling road.

The factory BHP were guaranteed by Porsche as minimum values...

Best regards,

Thanks David et all. I understand that in the case of a standard engine this is normally considered adequate in fact I used the running it up against the brakes with a CO meter up the jacksee to check my other MFI car. Only trouble is my 2.7 compression has been bumped from 8.5 to 9.5:1 and I would not trust the standard setting for ignition advance - I thought it better to try for an optimised setting which should be achieved on a dyno - or am I being too an*l here :?: :?:

Talk to Steve McHale and see what he recommends. You may be able to set up the car without a dyno but its great to have a bit of paper with graphs of torque & HP on to wave in front of your mates.

Bob Watson is another guy who might be worth talking to. His dyno is used by lots of early 911 people including Fran Tuthill. Last time I was over there he had two 2.7s in for major work; bums up, motors out. He has just done a top end rebuild on a buddy's track-only SC, we are over there tomorrow to pick it up. It's been run in on the dyno and is showing 230 plus, with more to come. I think dyno tuning is a great idea and Bob's a good guy who knows his stuff.

I don't think you will regret that Keith, Bob is one of the nicest Porsche guys I have met in ages and genuinely knows his stuff. You will enjoy his place - wall to wall Porsche Performance.

I drove my buddy's car for ten miles or so after we picked it up on Saturday; fantastic. Using the dyno, Bob has optimised the timing on the rebuilt motor, as well as a few other things, and it is an absolute flier. So light and revvy, feels like the fan is just going to take off on it's own it's moving so fast. Any healthy 3.0 motor is fun, but this is another planet.

Hope it works out as well for you
