Cracked my front windscreen

Hello guys.

Painful, spent 6 hours getting the front screen in and stretched the seal almost to the right places. Pushed the car out of the garage and after a few hours in the heat. And it cracked.
I hadn’t worked on the windshield for a few days.

So my question is:
Are the front windscreens toughened or not. This screen dates back to 90s before it came back into country. Can you actually buy them now toughened?

It’s a setback I’m ****ed off.

We have all been there!
All the screens I have had have been laminated even the new ones.
Have you had any metal work done around the windscreen frame?

As above Lee, tight fit and some tight curves too.

I have swapped the screen on my 73T 3 times in the last 38 years, and have always got a screen fitter in.
Today, only a few fitters can grasp these old ways.
All screens inc the original have been laminated.

If it helps, the screen in my near new AUDI A4 cracked standing still at the bottom of Mont Blanc in the heat...

Hello guys.

I didn’t have the window aperture changed so I guess very tight fit. I really didn’t like the new seal from Porsche. Reading online and watching some videos I’m going to experiment with a URO seal. It has a bigger outer lip to cover the gap. I was so close to having it right. Think I’m going to leave it in with the crack and try to get on with other stuff.

Plump seals from many places (maybe they all use the same supplier?) has cropped-up many times over the recent years.
My seal has been reused and was new from OPC in 88.

Ask Gary71 about his source, I think he had fresh ones (Rose Passion?) last year on his rebuild.

Don't know, I left the fitter to do the job, if he cracked the screen, he replaced it!
I went off to make 2 coffees and it was in when I got back!

I do know the screen can drop down too far and the top corners can become gappy and let water in and rot the lower corners (that happened to me), so I'm guessing you get the bottom edge in first and it's corners and pull the sides in from the bottom corners to the top and out at the mirror point.

Hi Lee,

Mine was an absolute pig of a job. Must have taken a dozen attempts. It always popped out along the bottom in the centre. Got it in the end. I started at the top always.

I believe uro are working on their window seals. They are active on pelican. I cannot speak for the front screen seal. The rear screen was terrible and I will never use uro rubber again until ive seen proof they now fit well. Sorry this doesn't help you but may help anyone thinking of using a uro rear screen seal. Check if it now fits. I last tried one in 2016

(which I have done a number of times- and had professionally fitted ...)

Agree with the above, done so myself. Rear screen trickier than the front according to the man from Autoglass at the time.

We all have our preferences. There is a YouTube video showing a guy using front uro seal. My rear window fell in with much of an issue.

I have two seals now. Just need to find time. Got to get back away soon.
