I think the Madcap is around 1990, there are some small details different to my 1993 Madcap.

A servo on double sided tape is not very positive!
Both servo's on the Madcaps are firmly screwed down, but some tapes are very firm, ie number plate 3M strips. Gorilla tapes can be very hi-tac too.

Finally sorted out the wheels (permission to have these as a Xmas pressie granted) via TTP Models, big Tamiya dealer in the UK.

Cheapest around too oddly and very helpful.

Tamiya have a strange sizing method for these parts where the 50mm rim is not, they size the tyres by the wheel's base dia, not where the tyre fits, and that added a lot of confusion until TTP explained.

£34 the set of 4 and new wheels for £17 the set.

Just need to find the body shell and order that too off ebay.

Made and painted the front clip suspension brace and made/fitted the front body mounting to take the retaining R clip.

Racing along now, but should be done the day after Xmas.
Still trying to get the 27MHz crystals though...

Damper seals arrived today from the excellent TTP models, a major Tamiya dealer in the UK and not that far from me oddly.

Real parts so fitted perfectly. Each damper has 2 O ring seals at their base, so the pack had enough to re-seal all 4 dampers and 2 spare.

Decided to fill the dampers with motorcycle font fork damping oil, on my shelf and all went in nicely. Bloody smelly stuff.

Left now overnight to check there are no leaks!

Everything else now in hand.

Post Office left a not saying my bag with crystals in has been posted with too little paid, so just coughed up £1.50, delivery this Saturday. Have another set on their way too...
Hope it all works now, but I have a plan B.

Wheels and tyres on the way as is a new body shell in clear acetate, so painting will be required, not sure just what colour though. Oh, and a Tamiya driver also on it's way for a bit of realism and extra speed of course.

Everything in the last sentence is a Xmas present, so untouchable till then...

Some progress!

Finally, the matched crystals arrived today after the postage saga, installed and linked to the car servos.
Everything works (!) but not quite as it should be.
The 'race' motor is not very revvy, slower than the stock motor so probably knackered. The power leads are a bit warm too after just a few mins on the bench without load.

Might change it for a nice new one.
The motor speed servo slightly over drives and moves the sliding arm to off at max position forward or reverse. There is another servo link hole to try to reduce the movement.
Steering is great and all trimmed to dead-ahead and equal left to right.

Oil tight dampers are on the car and set to the lowest ground clearance for 'stance'.

Egress spiky tyres and wheels are here, real Tamiya parts, the Tamiya works driver figure also here and the new shell too, the last 3 are Xmas presents so will have to wait until then.

Body and driver need paint so some thought needed what colour and how dense it needs to be.
Most paint the inside and then coat it over with gloss white.

I think I've pushed this thread enough now.
Looking back on this section of the Forum I have detailed several projects over several years, most well away from Porsche (as the section asks for, Member's Others) and note a rapidly diminishing interest in my endeavours, they obviously are getting too boring as I suspected this one would be right from the start.
The subjects that are full of difficulty seem to be of most interest (and I've had a few of those), but this Tamiya I think is particularly too easy, so understandably boring.

I'll post a few pics when it is all done as I like to conclude what I start, but doubt I'll start another non-Porsche project on DDK.

Think it’s more likely people are always interested, as I am, but just not much really to comment on or ask questions about

It has 507 views on DDK which is quite a few members looking at it. Why does a post have to be about how many hits you get? It’s informative and entertaining, but should not be your sole reason for the post. I enjoy it, but don’t go chasing numbers all the time.

I found it very interesting and was amazed at the details such as filling the dampers with oil and was wondering what you do with the finished car.
Is it just a process of building it or do people race them?

There is a very strong Vintage class racing interest in the USA and maybe in the UK too.

The design and quality engineering on these early cars is great, there is a whole new world to explore.
New motor arrived today.

As a bit of respite from the 911's sunroof rebuild, spent 45 mins in the garage with my old Drummond lathe making the front wheel conversion hubs.

The new wheels are off a Tamiya Egress, a full-on 4x4 racer and are big and wide and available, more than be said for Madcap tyres...

The drive to the wheels are via a hex shaped hub, drilled and splined 1/2 way through the drilling. The spline matches the rear drive shaft.
The Madcap is 2 WD so a free rotating insert has to be made, hex in shape for the wheel, but clear drilled for the front stub axles.

Found some perfect sized hex section brass and turned up the two hubs, all nice and easy.

The new chassis is therefore on 4 wheels, new motor in place and now ready for the body and the driver to be cut, mounting hole punched, and some paint applied.

But that will have to wait now as the sunroof has to be re-fitted to the big hole in the 911's roof panel. What can possibly go wrong?

Not far to go now.

The new body has been cut and shaped a little to fit the 3 body mount pins and the Porsche brake pad R clips fitted.

The Tamiya driver parts are assembled, painted, and mounted onto the face of the Rx in the car with double sided tape painted with the Humbrol paints I've accumulated over the many years hence the yellow helmet.

Just the inside of the body bubble to paint using real Tamiya paint which is an excuse to visit a new model shop over in Church Stretton Shropshire, so a nice day out to the National Trust site there too for coffee and cakes.

You’re doing so much better than me  .. my build has stalled due to life and stuff getting in the way .. I remember now why the last time i did a full sized car resto was about 20 years ago !

I fully understand. My last real resto was a bike a few years ago, still in the garage taking space up, BUT, if it sells this spring doing another bike will be an effort now I'm a bit older...much easier if you do one straight after another.
Still a few 911 tasks to do, but really looking for something for bored hands.

Fancy doing another Tamiya if I can find one, prob a 4x4 chassis, shaft drive, VW body.

Project Tamiyas are hard to find, none on ebay for correct (low) money. Classic Tamiya's are popular.

Next task when painted will be to make a few wall hangers and no more card boxes.

Colour for this one will be metalic dark blue with silver backing for a bit of 'pop' as the kids say.(apparently). :)

Snow and persistent poor temperatures have go in the way of painting the body, so 'forced' the conditions. think I've got away with it.

It is wise to use the real tamiya materials. The masking tapes are very bleed resistant, and the spray pattern of the rattle-can nozzle is a joy compared to Halford's finest...

Chose metallic blue with a bight silver top coat, or sealing coat.

You paint these shells from the inside, so the first colour on is the one you see.
First the prep. The inside of the shell is contaminated, so a good wash with warm soapy water, 2 rinses and dry with the wife's hair drier (she was out shopping).

Masked the windows and then 5 coats of blue.

The garage temp was 6 deg C and the paint must go one above 10 so used my hot air gun at a careful distance to pre heat the inside face of the shell and the spoiler. 5 light coats and the colour was nice and even and dense.

Post spray, hot air dried the paint and then a new coating etc. After 5 mins sprayed the backing silver all over the blue and decided that lot should air dry in the 3rd bedroom (model room) and will get the masking tape off after a few hours.

Nearly done!
