Hello all
Im just tidying up my 70 911 targa top and notice on the various websites that some models have a translucent sheath over the location pins
My car has some pins with sheathes and the others without
Not knowing if this top is original to my car could anyone tell me whether it should be sheathed or not ?
Im guessing the sheathes prevent rattling?
Thanks Matthew

Re: Targa location pin sheathes
I don't have the answer. In the meantime while waiting for someone that does. Take a peak at the parts diagrams. Find the locating pins and then see if there is another part on top. Its not full proof it would just mean it's not factory. It might be someone a bit like the "door seal door quiet kit" came up with an aftermarket solution and maybe that's what your seeing.tangerineT wrote: ↑Fri Jan 09, 2026 4:37 pm Hello all

Im not sure if the locating pins are on this linked parts diagram or if they are on a different parts diagram.

This may help............

Targa Roof Fixing Pin - Transparent
Compatible Vehicles
Porsche 911 Targa 2.0-2.4 (07/66-07/73)
Porsche 911 Targa 2.7-3.0 (08/73-06/77)
Product Details
The Targa Roof Fixing Pin in transparent design is a high-quality replacement part for various models of the Porsche 911 Targa. With a comparison number of 90156521642, this new part is specifically designed for the mentioned vehicle models.
Some people have said after installing these (aftermarket ones) the roof pins are hard to push in, and quite hard to secure the locking handle?
If not after originality, try cutting down some silicone tube nozzles and see how it effects your fitment of the roof into the locating holes?

Re: Targa location pin sheathes
I only have a ‘79 targa. I believe (but have frequently been wrong) that there is one locating pin from Porsche, covering all models up to ‘89. Current production seem to be with a back sheath although one of mine originally was with a translucent sheath (the other was missing its sheath). I had trouble getting my offside replacement pin to seat into the targa frame receptacle & tried pins from different suppliers. Turns out that I had got (too much) paint inside the receptacle & once I had removed that, life was kind to me.
I think that the plastic sheath acts as a rattle suppressor / shock absorber.

'79 Targa - restoration now mainly complete & being driven

Re: Targa location pin sheathes
Thanks for the replys
I looked on the original parts drawings but cant be sure if those pins have sheaths. Elsewhere i saw that the sheathes were an update for 1974 onwards
Im not sure if my 70 targa lid is original to the car but unless someone has a 70 or similar car and can say whether sheathes fit or not i will try as suggested with silicone tubes cut down .. cant see the point in ordering £80 of new pins for them to foul in the location holes

Re: Targa location pin sheathes
.
It's many (20 ?) years since I owned a Targa - a 1971 911E with an Andial-built 2.7 mfi engine - so my memories are a bit hazy ...
The car came to me with a second separate Targa roof that had never been folded & I don't remember either roofs having any form of 'sheath' over the locating pins.
