Winter jobs before the winter comes in! 911T 1973.

Post by 911hillclimber »

Time now to put the 73T to rest in the garage.

There has been a clicking while pushing the car in reverse for some time, so off with the 4 wheels and jet washed the underside for later under-arches clean, paint and WD40.

I got caught out in Kidderminster this summer in a HUGE biblical down pour and the roads were away deep in rain and sewage as drains erupted, 12" or more of flood soup to get through at the time.
Car has not smelt too good of late, so mainly the reason for the jet wash...

Hope to remove the two drive shafts this week and get fresh CV's on them locally (£70 each , fitted, GKN with new boots and clips). Trust that will kill the noise and the slight vibrations.

Just before this I am now awaiting the Brembo discs and pads from Design911 for the A type callipers I have (same pads as the S callipers) front and rear (M cals on the back) but simply fitting undrilled discs this time saving a lot of money.
This will need a re-bleed of the fluid done just 2 months ago, but OK, have the wife on the pedal!

That all done, pump the old Dunlops to 40 psi, charge the batteries to the max and put a good cover over it after a wash n wax.

Spring time will be new tyres like Gary's and James'.

The Dunlops are about 10 years old now and just 2 mm above the tread groove wear blocks. The front end will be re-aligned (DIY) and all will be ready for Spring in late march after an oil change.

When I did my resto, including new CV joints, I reused the old boots. The modern rubbers don’t seem to last. The new boots are in the shed (somewhere) in case the old ones ever split, but all still in good order for now.

Do you fill the petrol tank to the brim when you put away for the winter Graham?

Mike, no, never ever bothered.
Tank is the original, possibly 150,000 miles old and a wreck when I bought it in 1988.
So not loved!
In my 35 years with it on the road I’ve. Never bothered with the fuel level, just ethanol free.
It has just over 1/2 full.
I change the fuel filter every 2 years, same pump feeding the 3.2 since 1994 when it was new.

Hello Peter, forgot to reply!

The boots on the shafts now are about 10 years old which is when I changed my originals to new CV's.
The originals were perfect boots, CV's less so.
I used the original boots then as they were so supple compared to the new ones. The new were about 2 x the thickness and a poor loose fit on the CV's.
The CV's (unmarked) were cheap and had very poor steel cups that go over the outer steel body of the CV. I had to hammer brutally (Birmingham hammer...) the locations for the 6 bolts, all 4 CV's.

I don't think I added enough grease on assembly hence the rapid wear in 20K miles.

To pick-up the warrantee they offer they will insist on the new boots but I will take back the old ones.
