Dash bulb replacement

Hello

Am I right in saying best way to replace bulbs for dials etc are from inside the car and not from the trunk?
It’s a 69t

on a 69 912 you can only do from the trunk, instruments held in with clasp system and hand tightened nuts.
maybe a 911 instruments are removable from the front and held in by a rubber seal, lucky you if that's the case.

I've done it a slightly different way in the past - although it's many years since I last had a '69 model - however it was a LHD car.

I undid the knurled nuts & removed the clamp from the back of the speedo, then pulled the speedo out of the dash (from inside) & undid the speedo cable.

You can then put your hand through the hole & undo/remove the rev counter to do any necessary work on the back of that.

Similarly you can then put your hand through that hole & undo/remove the oil temp/pressure gauge ... & so on.

I found this easier than trying to do it all from the front compartment.

Remember not to replace the ignition bulb with a led, they don't draw enough current to make the alternator work.

I haven’t looked yet but what side under the dash it the connector for the dash light harness with bulb holders?

Forget that it goes the terminal 58a on the light switch its self

Need some advice if there are any electrical gurus out there.

Started to pull around under the dash and most of my wiring is original and I didn’t remove it. I purchased a new harness for the dash lights and was going to replace but I’ve noticed one end of the black and blue dash light harness is attached with a bullet connector to a completely different colour wire so it seems the dash lights may be getting power from somewhere else. I then found a purple and black wire which I think is the proper power wire which should connect to the black and blue dash harness, unfortunately the purple and black wire is taped up and not being used. The wire that is connected to the end of the black and blue wire is going to the clock. Think it’s white? need to get the colour of the wire, but I’m wondering if I disconnected that wire and install it to the correct connector at the end of purple wire. It may work. Guess I need to trace it back. I did check the switch and the purple and black is there.

Any thoughts

Fuse, fuse, fuse. Did i say fuse?

Put a fuse inline with the dash bulbs while you're at it. They were never fused as standard and a loom fire behind the dash is a nightmare.

Yes thanks Johnny I’ve already done that but need to make sure the dash lights actually feedback to terminal 58A as I found the purple and black wire not attached to the black and blue dash harness.

why don't you just connect the blue/black directly to the black /purple at ignition switch 58A. That's where I put my fuse under the dash to allow easy access

Think I solved it. I eventually found the black and purple cable and it was attached the blue and black dash bulb harness. The spare wire I found taped up had signal written on it. Researching I think it’s for the back of the tachometer?

I have now fitted all new LED bulbs and a new dash bulb harness with new bulb holders. Was a real pain in the ass.
