Just a quick update.... Engine out, replaced the barrel, piston and pin and put it all back together and back in the car.... Took the opportunity to tidy up the engine bay whilst I was at it and got everything Cerakoted in armour (satin) black with a few lime green highlights... IVA final test booked for Monday 7th October, but taking no chances this time and have booked transport to get the car there and back. Have measured the Db for the noise test on my mobile phone which has proved to be rather accurate and only 88Db so confident I'll pass this time....

Still too noisy according to IVA, going to swap out the Vintage Speed Exhaust for a standard Type 4 exhaust to see if that will get me through the test...

Hopefully any re-test cost were low?

I have wondered how effective the CSP insert is, said to reduce noise by 4db. On a long journey I find my stinger exhaust drones, but fantastic noise when accelerating through the revs.

I guess a standard unit might be a safer option.

Yes, also a good conversation point to the tester, makes it a bit harder to fail.

Is IVA an annual test or a one-off?

I made something like the CSP tailpipe muffler as part of my first attempt to quiten it down, but was still too noisy. Then added a baffle plate inside the exhaust tail pipe, restricting 75% of the output pipe, but both were still too noisy. Thats why i have decided to go for a standard exhaust, as the type 4 exhaust has an end tailpipe, i always have the option of taking this through another muffler to get down to the required 99Db.
At least the IVA is a one off test and once I've passed it then only MOTs to look forward to in 3 years time... and then presuming I get an age related plate then it will only have to conform to 1971 emission standards... Roll on next Monday and hooefully get IVA put to bed.

Take a set of these for the tester

maverick
noun

2. an unbranded calf or yearling.
Origin mid 19th century: from the name of Samuel A. Maverick (1803–70), a Texas rancher who did not brand his cattle.

In my experiences with my 911 / 3.2 ex hillclimb car, the noise aspect of the MoT is down to the test technician to decide if too much etc, so a bit of a lottery, but mine has never failed in 34 years.
This has always been with the 2 in-3 out silencer, some 40 years old now and twice with the pipes all open(!).

Good luck for the next test.
