Here is my signal orange, 3.0 litre 6 engined, 914 GT rep.
Cosmetically super clean, and now fresh back from a check over and service by Steve Winter at Jaz, it’s up for sale.
It’s originally a 1974 2.0 litre, converted much later to an ivory 914-6 rep, that I imported from Texas in 2015.
I then set about collecting parts from the US and Europe and set to building it into a fully sorted GT rep.
I did most of the metal, paint and GT upgrade work in mid Wales in 2017.
Richard “Moggy” Morgan project managed the build for me, it was his last ever petrol project.
The orange paint is really nice, went on thick, and you can’t see any ivory anywhere.
The GT arches are Restoration Design steel ones, the flared sills are steel, and the GT front and rear bumpers are the FSH GRP ones.
Once the metal paint and cosmetic stuff was done, I spent a big chunk at Maxted Page having it fully sorted mechanically.
It’s running a high compression 3.0 6 on Weber 40IDAs.
It started as a US spec 3.0 SC. Which then had a full rebuild in 2010 to make it Go:
- 9:5:1 JE pistons, Mahle cylinders, S Cams
- 40 IDA Webers, K&Ns w/ watershields
- Carrera tensioners
230bhp maybe more on tap plus track time turned out to be too much for the original 901 gearbox, and I upgraded to 915 spec in 2020.
The custom parts you need from Germany make this a notoriously tricky and expensive undertaking.
The 915 gearbox was a low mileage Mike Bainbridge rebuild from another car.
Mike Bainbridge then helped in converting it to 916 configuration.
It’s super quick. Torque all the way from down low. 0-60 in 6 secs is realistic.
And don’t worry: the upgraded brakes work just fine!
I had it out on Silverstone GP circuit with Richard Attwood at the wheel and he was genuinely impressed.
The roadholding is superb, probably the best handling car I’ll ever own.
Although the chassis is stiff with the roll cage, the ride does not feel too harsh on normal roads.
The Toyo R888Rs roll fine when cruising on motorways, while they get lovely and sticky when you dart about the backroads.
I’ve driven it across Europe several times, and have loved every minute behind the wheel.
The car was voted Ultimate Porsche readers’ “Car Of The Year 2018” : that magazine might have folded, but the car continues to turn heads everywhere.
All over the car are trick parts, including:
- SC front suspension, Konis and adjustable springs, Elephant racing tie rod ends and bushings, anti bumpsteer kit
- Weltmeister adjustable front sway bar, factory rear bar
- Full GT reinforcing kit installed, i.e. the chassis strengthening plates, plus re-enforced rear trailing arms
- Rears are rare 8x15 minilites, fronts genuine 7x15 Fuchs
- Front brakes are ally S calipers, rear are PMB 914-6 GT jobbies. Drilled and vented rotors at both ends too
- Patrick Motorsports GT front oil cooler
- Holley Red fuel pump
- New Dansk fuel tank (62 ltr)
- Hi torque starter motor
- Classic Retrofit CDI+ box
- Safety Devices roll cage
- Rennshift short shift kit
- Silver dot 911 gauges, 10k tacho
- FEV ADS gas fire extinguisher
- BF Torino 914GT seats in leather / cord
- 3 / 5 point race harnesses
- Plumbed in rally intercom system
- GT front tow hook
- Bosch cutoff switch
- AutoAtlanta gas strut conversion for rear boot
- 914rubber LED headlamp conversion
- 2 in 3 out muffler (not too noisy either)
… plus loads of other stuff to add later, because I’d forgotten just how long the list was!
I have a fat file with most of the receipts and work details, all scanned and ready to share with anyone who is seriously interested.
The car owes me a lot of time and money. I didn’t hold back on any detail.
When ploughing through all the receipts today I simply stopped counting at 70k… believe me I kept spending.
And that’s on a base car and a lot of parts I bought before 914 values started to shoot up.
For sure at today’s prices to build a same spec car you’d have to spend a lot more than that, and face the time and hassle with of doing it too.
So I think my price of 64,995 represents a bargain.
To sweetened the deal I will even throw in a spare set of wheels (7x15 genuine Fuchs, 8x15 Braid BZ fuchs reps)
DM me if you are interested, and before I pass it to a dealer...
