912 steel wheels

Morning all.

I took my newly imported 912 steels wheels to get some new tyres fitted, it turns out all them had inner tubes in them, the valves the garage used, also didn’t fit in the wheel and were very loose.
Ultimately for now I had to have the inner tubes refitted. When I got I had some valves spare and tried them in tbe spare, they are loose and just fall out so I’m not sure what to do.

Question is would these of been opened up for some reason to take an inner tube? Or another reason? Or is this common and there’s a special valve people use?

Give Dougal Cawley (Longstone Tyres) a shout - he'll fill you in with all your options - and probably try to sell you some tyres. :lol:

What is the part no. stamped into the front centre of the wheels - if they're KpZ rims the no. will start with '60' (4.5in) or '61' (5.5in).

The valve hole diameter decreased to coincide with the change from tube-type to tubeless tyres.

There are 'fatter' valves that you could try - eg TR415's :

Thanks for this, I did some searching the other day but it didn’t come back with much I only found the TR sizes for lengths not diameters, but looking at the tr15 it’s definitely wider.

I’ll check the wheel stamps when I get in from work

I think Porsche fitted inner tubes in everything into the 1970s!

quite contraversial really. they fitted inner tubes in 60% profile tyres. I don't know of anyone else who did that. And Porsche certainly didnt do it for long.

But yep earl;y Porsche wheels determine that you need innner tubes.

There are 2 valve stem sizes (dunno why) the sort of standard now is a TR13 valve and there was the larger TR15.

just fit Michelin tubes and have done with it.
