it's a difficult one James
911 is more refined, comfier seats, nice sound system and certainly wins on sheer grunt, open top with blue sky above you and the flat 6 on full song is wonderful, and over the longer distances 911is the one, it’ll be taking me and the missus on our honeymoon tour down to the south of France, so I guess it is first choice.
Having said that , the 914 is a little nutter, more raw I‘d say, I do feel it’s underpowered and clearly lacks the power of my 911 but I see that as a compliment to the 911, if I increased the power on it and tweaked the suspension then I would be really stuck on choice as they’d be too sort of similar, which is why it will remain relatively stock powered for now. Each time I get in it I still can’t help grinning, it’s just so much fun and chuckable both around town and on country roads.
For spirited driving 914 is all mid-range power and needs a bit more work to get the best out of it’s performance than 911in the does , but the 911 requires more work in the handling dept because of it's performance, which sort of sums up the compliment between the two I’d say. Both cars offer plenty in terms of driver involvement so it all depends on how I feel on the day as to which car I’d take out.
I took much the same route in both cars on the day above and gave them some real stick, I’d say the 911 was more exhilarating, but you can’t knock a 914 for pure fun, a well set up 914/6 must be awesome.
Sorry to all 914 owners, but if I could own only one then it would be the 911, but if I didn’t have the 911, I’d be more than happy with the 914 on it’s own.
I can see why you are selling the '67 that must be a much harder choice than I face with my cars
