I found wire brush on the grinder to be the best, along with hacking away with a large screwdriver. But I saw in a video this is the fastest way.: https://shop.snapon.com/product/Remove- ... ol/PTGR280 although I don't know a UK source.
1970 911T, Signal orange (Restoration thread)
1988 3.2 Carrera backdate, Black
2001 996 Turbo, Lapis blue (am I allowed to put that here?)
I'm looking for a pre-impact bumper 911S or other high-revving 911 to restore - please let me know if you see one.

Thanks Rob.
If it’s Snap-On I’m sure Angus will have an account with them. I’ll mention it when I’m up there later this week but it’ll probably be all done by then.

Apparently they have one already so should be stripped in double-quick time.matteo68 wrote:Thanks Rob.

I've got one of those. It's OK but slow removing underseal (and it flies everywhere).
For the really hard interior stuff, I found warming with a heat gun and then wire stripping with a knotted wire brush the most expedient

Do you mean the sound-deadening material? If so, we got that off in half a day with dry-ice and alcohol - see above.PeterK wrote:I've got one of those. It's OK but slow removing underseal (and it flies everywhere).

More progress to report - shell is fully stripped and blasted now, and whilst the extent of the accident damage is unfortunately worse than first thought (front engine cross-member has been moved forward by the engine upon impact and most the inner wings are badly dented), the rust thankfully remains minimal / extremely limited now that we can see all the metal underneath the schutz & sound deadening material.
The floor pan is showing a greater than usual amount of dents but nothing that can’t be ‘polished out’!
Epoxy primer when Neil gets back from a week’s holiday and then the metal repairs will begin…

Some more geek details for your enjoyment:
Correct Bosch internally-illuminated fog light pull switch with smooth shiny finish for the number illumination lamps with ‘push-on / quick disconnect’ (not the incorrect screw-clamp type) connectors:
Correct Bosch 849 twin CDI pull switches again with smooth shiny finish knob and ‘push-on, quick disconnect’ connectors (dated 9/70):
Steel braided oil cooler crossover lines and M30 Argus straight and 90 degree fittings, as fitted to the 2.5 SR, unlike the hard lines fitted to the 2.3 ST:
Note the cotton webbing (not nylon) and leather spare tyre strap above. The repro strap I bought from ST Classics in New Zealand (renowned for making good but not-quite correct parts) had nylon webbing which Billy Bean helpfully commented on earlier in the year when I showed him at Greatworth: “wrong!”, so me being me went and searched eBay for black cotton webbing and bought 1 metre of the stuff in 28mm wide and a metre of 32mm and then when I’d discovered the leather part was 32mm wide, bought a 3 metre length of that and took it to a leatherworker who helpfully is directly opposite my office in Thame. She mainly makes very expensive handbags, belts and whatnot and was most puzzled by my request but seemed to be happy to take the strap apart and remake it ‘when I have a few minutes’. 2 months later and I’m still waiting for a text or a wave from her to say it’s done but I’m discovering not much of this project happens quickly, which isn’t great when you’re of a persistent but not particularly patient disposition…
More anon.

Another NOS parts update: we had been really struggling to find a set of Mahle 2.5 long-stroke (86.7mm x 70.4mm) pistons & cylinders, whether new or NOS. MAR Motorsport were supposed to have had a new set, albeit with 9.3:1 compression ratio instead of the correct 10.3:1, but they then reported that they couldn’t get the cylinders from Mahle for months and months. Angus then discovered FVD had a set, but the price was eye-watering:… €8,300 plus shipping and they were also likely to be the ones with the lower compression ratio (that’s all Mahle make for the long-stroke set now, although strangely the short-stroke set does have the higher CR):

By co-incidence, I had sent an update email to a friend of mine in the States, Gene Ulm, in which I told him about the parts I was still looking for (he had previously told me he had an NOS set of the exact set of P&Cs that I need but wasn’t sure if he wanted to sell them or not).
He replied to my email saying he would be more than happy to part with his set if he could make a contribution to my efforts and may also be heading to London for a week from the 5th November. I asked him what he wanted for them and he said he wanted what he paid for them back in 2012 - $5,500. To say I was delighted would be an understatement!! (he had already sold me a set of ‘65 upper and lower twin-plug valve covers - the lower ones are specified for the type 911/70 2.5 engine - and also a set of centre-lube chain housing covers).
So these will be coming in his hand luggage next weekend and with my refurbished and sleeved-down 5R HB throttle bodies almost ready for Matt Blast to ship to me with a repair code on the customs declaration, we should be able to make some really good progress on the engine soon as well.

Yes, the whole project - apart from sourcing rare / NOS parts which takes an age so best left to me!
