V5 - Engine swap help!

Post by Anta »

Hi All, just wondering if anyone has experience with this…

I am thinking of selling my 550 Spyder so was looking through the paperwork to make sure all is in order. It is registered correctly and has an SVA…

Issue is I had a new engine built a couple of years ago so need to update the engine number and CC. And the colour is wrong as grey not silver.

Looking at the DVLA site I need to produce evidence or receipt for engine etc, which I can’t do as it was built from a used case with new bits…

I could do without them saying it needs it inspected, should I just change the CC and colour or just leave well alone? Just don’t want to put off buyers who do a simple lookup on the details….

Also concerned how long it might tale to wondering if anyone has had a similar change done in Covid times? Thanks all.

Peter, thanks for the note….I am thinking along these lines, answer is no as builder is a friend and sourced the parts directly, I paid him so thinking about an honest invoice from him to me just documenting spec, time frame and parts used together with taking old engine out and new one in….

Hoping this does the trick.

.

DVLA will also accept confirmation of the new engine number/capacity on headed paper from a garage - do you know a garage that could oblige ?

That's exactly what I did - my friend who owns a specialist garage inspected the engine and confirmed serial number, cc and that it was the same type as what was originally fitted. I sent this off to DVLA who updated the V5.

Thanks guys. Below is the text from the DVLA site, so the garage route is the last option. I have had the car 11 years so didn’t see that as an option. I might go for both and create a receipt and get a garage to confirm it is now that number…. Belt and braces….

Also just realised the mileage is not consistently clocking on so need to sort that now too! Hoping it is just the little plastic cog!

Change of engine number or cylinder capacity (cc)
You need to provide either:

- a receipt for the replacement engine
- written evidence from the manufacturer
- an inspection report provided for insurance purposes
- written confirmation on headed paper from a garage (if the change took place before you bought the (vehicle)

Back in the 80s I had an oval which had a 34hp 1200 fitted. Original 30hp engine came with the car. So I rebuilt and re fitted it. Just filled in the changes section on log book sent it off and it came back with the original engine serial number on the log.

Since then I always wondered if dvla track those changes. In other words could they (or would they) tell you about engine number changes, colour changes etc on a particular car if you requested it :?: :?:

So…. No sign of V5 yet but I have tackled the speedo issue. Sent it off to JDO in Yorkshire…

Great service received, it was just the plastic cog. I looked at several videos of people opening up the Speedo like they were opening a can of tuna with a screwdriver and whilst tempted to dive in……I decided having looked on Ebay at the value of a 356 Speedo to send it off to the experts. Anyway, 48 hours and £115 later all sorted.

The time clock in my 912 has never worked and they do a simple quartz conversions for those so will send that at some point. Very nice to get simple, old school service.

Just need the DVLA to get cracking!
