Anyone know of a spaceframe chassis RS60 ?

Post by higs356 »

Wondering if such a beast exists with a mid mount engine rather than those I've seen based on a VW floorpan

Will do when I get round to building the body shell. Chassis will be based on an M&W, it has the correct wheel base for an RS60.

RS60

Hi there Higs 356, in answer to your question (and spyder finder's response) - yes it has already been done! About 6 years ago Mohr was asked to rebody an M&W 550 Spyder as an RS60 (see photo). As you can see, the chassis is a basic M&W, which initially the customer was happy to go with - simply beefed up here and there, but by NO means a "spaceframe".

The same customer has recently gone back to Mohr with a view to having
their new 550A spaceframe chassis adapted. This is a fairly straightforward exercise as the dimensions are very similar. Indeed Mohr have been asked to develop an RS60 on the 550A running gear for future sales in Germany. This is another body that would really lend itself to the new "sprayed alloy" (AEH) process. Some 10 (?) years ago there was a superb one off RS60 made in Aluminium, seriously let down by being mounted on a cut'n shut Beetle floorpan of all things!

I dont know if that one is still around but would be interested to hear from anyone with any knowledge about it.

Oh dear, looks like a GP shell, hope they make a new shell closer to the original, now that would be something!

Yes, there is one in UK.

The boss of GP whose name escapes me built one many years ago for his own use.

It has all the authentic bits too..except the 4-cam..

Kind regards

Hi Spyder Finder,

Just to clarify the situation, the German customer supplied both the original M&W chassis AND the RS60 body to Mohr, and yes it was a GP body. The same body style that was used as a buck for the alloy bodied car.

Hear what you're saying about the GP body - although of course it would never be "authentic" being in GRP? Reading between the lines it seems that you are producing your own body buck ? - will that be "authentic"
aluminium? And given your comments, I imagine that your offering will be an authentic shape? Hope it finds it's way onto the UK market, as a truly authentic body style with a properly designed spaceframe chassis would be a most welcome addition to the UK scene - best of luck and look forward to seeing the finished item.

Mohr (our business partner) has access to an absolute Aladdin's Cave of Porsche originals, one of their suppliers has a huge wharehouse full of ancient and modern Porsches including RS60, 550, 904, 908, 910 and 917. Indeed Mohr's 904 body was taken directly from the original Heinkel moulds that he owns - you can't get much more original than that.

As with all Mohr's projects, if he goes down the route of offering an RS60
- it WILL be taken from original panels. However, at this stage the enquiry is customer driven, not something that Mohr particularly wants to undertake - especially as they have two more (non Porsche) replicas about to be unveiled (late Spring).

By the way, what happened to the GP product, seems to have gone underground? Would be nice to see a bit of variety on the market.

David - the guy you're thinking of was/is John Jobber (ex- Brabham team mechanic) - he built the car back in '84.

However it was a 718 RSK not the later RS60.

I repeatedly tried to persuade him to sell me a duplicate body/chassis but he said it wasn't cost-effective.

Martin thats the intension, authentic body with space frame built from scratch. The first will be in ally and then a mould taken. As you said there is an opening for a true RS60 replica and this will hopefully fill it.
