Not mine. Anyone know what the story is on this wheel says it has the plastic light weight butterfly horn pad.

That is the same wheel and horn pad I have on my car. Pricing does seem a tad optimistic so I would sell you mine for 10% less ( - ;

The seller's description is fairly accurate & the price does seem crazy but ....

An original lightweight plastic ('butterfly' as opposed to 'bowtie')* hornpad is a very rare part & rarely seen for sale - especially if it is not cracked which most were/are - so that on its own is a valuable item to the owner of an early 2.7RS that doesn't have their original part.

As for the steering wheel - for reference, I sold a similar original 'RSR' wheel - complete with the original Factory Racing Dept invoice - back in 2008 for ~$3000. It was bought by a long standing member of the Early S Registry for his RS & the car still wears that wheel to this day.

So, given the above, maybe the price isn't as ridiculous as we might first think ....

That’s very interesting Andy. My wheel has the same part number but the finish looks different so I presume it has been re-covered at some stage. I think I am going to swap the horn pad over for my spare one!

Feroz - '803.10' was the part number for a std 380mm plastic ('ebonite') 914/6 steering wheel.

It is that version that was used by the Factory as the basis for the 'double wrapped' thick-rim 'RSR' leather wheels.

Many people have subsequently taken an 803.10 plastic wheel & had it wrapped (most commonly in the US by Don at Dallas Custom Steering Wheel in Texas) to mimic the Factory's version ...

Thanks Andy. That makes sense and is probably what I have. I have an old receipt from Freisinger Motorsport for the wheel for about EUR 2500 and I suspected it was the Freisinger mark up, could be that they were charging a premium for the horn pad?

I think u ll find proper 911 Rs wheels can cost almost anything these days,a mutual friend of ours in St Albans sold one ,no hub,for abt £3000
I did not know there were different butterfly’s until reading Andy’s post
Most wheels come off 914 s ,just drill extra whole to mount.........
I reckon ur chances with invoice from freissinger cud be the real thing!

If you have one of the early plastic butterfly hornpads that's a rare part.

They are/were quite fragile as I said previously & they often cracked early in their life - probably why the Factory resorted to fitting the standard hornpad to 2.7RS models after a fairly brief period.

The weight saving was fairly minimal anyway !

They do surface occasionally - sellers sometimes not realising what they have as the number on the back was the same for both versions ...

I have just paid £1000 for a RS steering wheel which needs restoring for a first 500 vehicle. I need a plastic horn push. I am currently having one scanned and 3D printed should anyone be interested. If anyone has a plastic one for sale please get in touch. My customer is not prepared to pay that much for one. Andy knows as much as I do that they are so rare .

Have to admire the dedication to weight saving... although a nice pair of alloy trailing arms probably made more of a difference when they arrived (the following year?)

Unless I’m missing something in the description or the photos I see no evidence of the correct first series RS horn batwing in that eBay ad.
I only see a standard butterfly horn push.

Regards
Mike

The (casting ?) number on the back of both the metal & plastic versions is the same:

901.613.805.0

Yes, same part number on both. One is all plastic and the other has metal frame surrounds and is much cooler to touch. I have both and didn’t realise they were different - I guess you wouldn’t unless you were looking.
