Re: All the coolest Porsches are mid engine and air-cooled!
Some small progress today. Adjusted the gear shifting. Better but not perfect. I had to access it under the car.
Unfortunately the handbrake stopped completely locking/ working. Tried to find where to adjust it but seems to be hidden where I can't reach. Any ideas?
It a pain not to have a lift.
Took the Speedo cable off at the gearbox and was able to spin it. Took is off the Speedo and cleaned a bit. Its a tiny metal think. I suspect it isn't seating or the plastic received is worn. I did get the chance to take for a drive because it was too dark.

One of the deep joys of 914 ownership !! Welcome to setting the venting clearance and getting the handbrake to work.Set aside at least a week the first time, and have a groundsheet underneath to catch the inner adjusters on the calipers as they make their bid for freedom.

The lift is the easy bit, the £x0,000 that it costs to have a building to put it in is the bit that hurts.![]()

Neil:
I has a real need to find a ramp to examine a particular problem with my daily Skoda. Found a very local company who rented out their ramp/bay for £8/hr
For a full day it is £40, money well spent. Having a ramp is absolute luxury and you can do thing so quickly having one.
Might be worth a google in your area.

That gear is for the odometer, ie when your speedo works, but the miles don't clock up on the gauge.neilbardsley wrote:Perhaps I need one of these?

First of all find out what's happening with your speedo, and as Clive says, ask Angus.

Re: All the coolest Porsches are mid engine and air-cooled!
Small progress this morning. I disconnect the speedo cable from the back of the speedo. Then drove back/forward trying to hold the end of the cable. I confirmed that it is being turned by the gearbox. Next I think I have to remove the speedo and check the receiver? What is a good source for parts?

Neil - see if you can borrow another speedo - doesn't matter if it's from a 911, 912 or 914 - & connect it to your speedo cable (you don't need to install it in the dash).
Drive it a short distance & see if it works - that will tell you if your existing speedo is faulty.

Hi Neil
Car looks great, enjoy.
I know you are new to 914s, so have a look at 914world in the states, and the Pelican Parts site for loads of how-to guides and threads. When I built my car, it could me out of the do-do many times, and gave loads of useful ideas.
The gearshift is a good example, there is a guide somewhere on how to adjust inside the car. from memory it is select 2nd or 3rd, remove the inspection cover and loosen the splined connector. You can then very carefully rotate the shift rod (in tiny increments ) to give more lateral movement so you can select 1st and reverse. Obviously you can twist the wrong way, but you only do that once! It was the most effective way I found of doing it, assuming all else is healthy.

If your speedo does need mending consider sending it to Waldemar Kortas at https://www.instagram.com/classicautoclock/?hl=en
I once heard someone say he's who Roger Bray uses, he mended my tacho and I was pleased with the price and service.

Re: All the coolest Porsches are mid engine and air-cooled!
Took it for a 10 mins drive. Played with the idle but when warmed up was idling well. Gear since not shifting well. Drives nicely when in the correct gear. I'm off work Friday so can have a proper go in the daylight.

Neil Re-Speedo drive, take the speedo out and use a drill (pref speed variable battery drill) put a match stick or similar in the back of speedo drive and run it up if it doesn't move the needle it's the speedo head is at fault.
