The difference between 4 & 5 pin chrome door window switch
Hello
Could anyone tell me the difference between a four pin and 5 pin chrome window switch ?
Is the extra pin simply an additional earth or common pin ? Can a four pin be adapted to fit a 5 pin loom setup?
Any help would be appreciated.

In a 5 pin switch there are two live feeds and two motor wires one for up and one down. The other is a ground which is connected internally providing two a grounds for the motor. The switch works by grounding the motor either on the up feed or down feed. It must be possible to provide the same function using a 4 pin by grounding the motor and switching the live. If the switch can take it. By that logic one should be able to rewire the circuit using the wires for different purposes. Knowing how a 4 pin is wired would help. Someone must have worked a solution out already. Does anyone have a pre 72 wiring diagram showing a 4 pin switch?

Has anyone investigated and successfully modified the motors themselves? It seems the logical thing to do.

i have 4 pin switches in my 72. Couldnt find 5 pin anywhere except for later ones with black bezels (off a 964 i think). I looked into vapour depositing chrome on them, painting them chrome, getting a chrome metal 'cover' and even chrome wrap but it was all rubbish. So i went with the replacement 4 pin chromed bezel switches.
I have the original sardine can motors and i dont know how he did it, but Garry at Visual FX wired them up for me. Actually it was James but you get the point.
They work fine but dont ask me how they did it. It's all Electrickery.

Having taken the advice and used the diagrams as a guide I can confirm a auto electrician successfully used the four pin switches where previously 5 pin were used. He explained the 5 pin switches work by switching the polarity from the the red-white to the red/black wires. So when the red/white is live the red/black isn't and vice versa The two motors were grounded already and a separate fused live controlled by the ignition switch was required and installed to make the passenger switch work. The four pin switches now work as intended.
I cannot guarantee this works for all motors but the two motors with red/white, red/black, two blue motor wires and brown ground wire now work as described above as a switched live circuit. The 4 pin switches now switch the two live feeds to the two motor wires independently of each other.
