Tall Driver Issue

Post by 70sThrowback »

Hey all,

friend of mine went to look at a 356B roadster yesterday. He came away disheartened as he was too tall to fit in. The car had a bench seat in the front, he found with the steering wheel he couldn't sit comfortably never mind drive. He is 6'2", long legs. Any other tall 356 drivers had this issue? I should point out this was a Rod Emory creation currently at Leeds JCT.

So I wondering what is the case with standard seats etc? I am thinking perhaps rally style bucket seats and a smaller diameter steering wheel would resolve the issue. Wondering if other owners have had this issue and what did they do to resolve.

At 6' 3" I've never had a problem with the more than ten 356's I've had over the years including coupes and open cars. It may be that either the seat track is stuck and not allowing rearward travel, the seats have been "overstuffed" or some other issue.

I think its some sort of weird Rod Emory seat thats in there, its definitely not standard. I just thought it would be better to check in the real world with people who drive these. Thanks for the answer, much appreciated and definitely resolves this.

Most interior restorers fill up the seat bottoms way to much. At times they look like ballons about to explode and you have no side support what so ever.

This is a problem on all 356 and early 911s, you sit "on" the seats not "in" them..

Really hard to grasp that it is so extremely hard to make seats usable..

I'm 6'2", I just sat in my A and measured the headroom and found there's a good 2" to spare.

My seats were nicely reupholstered a couple of years ago.

I can imagine that a bench seat would sit higher than separate seats.

It may be a trick of the photography BUT the Steering Wheel also looks Large

A Speedster Steering wheel should be 400 mm Outside Diameter - take a tape with you

Look carefully at the undersideof the car.
Rod Emory produces his cars in California and therefore they do not require a great deal of underbody Seam Sealing or Corrosion Protection

Mike I think the photo shows Mikes car, His wheel looks the 420mm version. Mine is the 400mm speedster type. I think many specified that smaller wheel in preference. I have always found plenty of room in the car but I was only 6 foot tall when I bought it and seem now to be reducing in height as I have got older !!

That Nardi s/wheel looks like a 40cm wheel (but could possibly be 42/43cm).

The reason I asked if it was a Silver car with a red interior was that there can't be many Emory 356B Roadsters around !!

That car belongs (or did) to Serhad - see his thread on the car here:

Oooofff! I do love that car. They’ve dropped the price since last year when it was £250k. Your friend has great taste.

He isn't buying it, in fact the car is already reserved. He was there getting an MOT on his GTS, so as he is looking for a 356 asked to have a sit in it, to then discover he couldn't :). Thanks for all the replies though, definitely sounds like this car set up, rather than a 356 problem.
