If you had a very tired twin carb 1700 type four...
Its sat for a year and ran poorly before hand

What would you do with it?
Its the second one that been in the shop in 30 years so although building the engine is easy enough for my guys...
We normally speak in fluent 911! this regional dialect of 914 has me wondering what other options there are

Normally I'd follow the O.E build is best
I feel the like it deserves more go.

Original cases, so would like to use them again its got 10psi in one cylinder and spins freely by hand and makes oil pressure cranking
Least it needs is open up cases...the heads rebuilt... a set of Rings... Bearings... during a look in the cases to check every thing & clean it...
I'm sure a few while-you-there's will present.

I was going to call an old school friend who built a 2.4 Sandrail buggy thingy to talk type 4's but I think know his answer similar to mine

I kept my 1700 bottom end, but changed pistons and barrels to get it to 1900cc

Were they a machine fit or bolt on mod??

That's the kind of thing I'm thinking of a bit more but not too much.

Case bores are identical for all versions (1.7 - 2.0). 1.7 Heads have a 100mm bore for the cylinders. 1.8-2.0 heads have a 105mm bore for the larger cylinders.

So the 1.7 heads will need machined for the 96mm pistons.

You will need to change the cam. Its probably worn anyway and a major factor in the less than 50bhp per litre power output. Use a Web 86 with some new followers.

Cheers been reading up about these engines, got more research to do & then put forward a plan to the owner after bank holiday

Indeed new Cam is happening, looked up the firm, looks like go kit plenty of good reviews thanks for recommendation.


Also been reading about Jake Raby in the US. He does very good work, priced accordingly...

and a very nice 2560cc flat four with 220BHP and 205Ft-lbs
