Re: Specialist cars of malton

Post by vimal »

I’ve received a lot of messages on this over the past week (from ddk members and others - even one from HK) and promised an update at the end of the week and and so here it is.

I don’t have the car yet but it has been having quite a lot of work done to it: paint, fan and housing refurb, clutch done, various corroded items replaced, big service etc. I’ve been receiving pics of the work being done and all looking good The car is due to be delivered to me next week - waiting for confirmation of when. Will update again - with pictures hopefully.

I guess we are a bit nervous on your behalf! It's a sad state of affairs when there is such distrust (if that's the right word) of (specific) specialists.
Hope it goes well. Exciting to be getting a new car!

Hi Guys,

I'm the author of the thread on 911UK which was linked earlier in this thread. I've been waiting to have my registration approved this last ten days or so. Having completed that process this morning I've now sought permission from a forum moderator to post my story on DDK. Since posting on 911UK, I too have been in touch with some people by PM.

If anyone who has reached out to Vimal by PM, as referenced above, or Vimal himself would like to contact me I'd be more than happy to discuss any issues with you. I'd particularly like to hear from the HK person. Perhaps there are some people out there whose car has been sold on their behalf by Specialist Cars of Malton who might wish to contact me?

Just a word to Vimal. I note you said that you are hoping to have the car delivered. I would urge you (and any buyer of any car from any dealer) to go and inspect any car before you complete and take delivery. Once you've accepted something you really are on the back foot. It's much better to be slow and steady and methodical and not to accept delivery until you are happy. You could always get an inspection done by an independent professional if you're a long way away.

Believe it or not, there are dealers out there who would take your money and allow you to return from the UK to somewhere overseas (like Ireland) with a defective and incomplete car who might then suggest to you that it is your responsibility to return the car, at your own time and expense, in order for the dealer to rectify their own poor work.

Ciaran,

Specialist cars of malton

Post by vimal »

Delivery day today! My (very shiny) 964 came down all the way from Yorkshire this evening.

I don’t want to get involved in what seems to be a long standing dispute with SCM but I am aware that lawyers are involved and John is unable to respond publicly.

What I can say is that my experience with SCM has been a very good one. John has been professional and courteous throughout, all the work I asked for has been done and the car has been prepared to a really high standard. I am very happy with it and looking forward to driving it.

Nice one. I bought my first Porsche from SCOM. Nice memories for me, sorry to hear about the troubles of others.

Congratulations, I hope it is everything you expect and desire of it. I do hope that Specialist Cars of Malton were not required to do any extensive mechanical work on the car as I have growing evidence of their lack of capability in that area.

I note that John Hawkins has told you that lawyers are involved and he is unable to respond publicly. From my experience, all I can say is that you cannot believe a word that comes out of his mouth. What does surprise me, and perhaps should provide caution to any who have read my thread, is that Hawkins has not made any formal or legal attempt to have me withdraw or remove my posts about him and his business. If there was a defense to what I have said about him and his business, I think most people would expect him to have utilised it by now.

I wish you the very best with your new car.

Thanks all - I am surprised by the ride height too - though I was warned about the standard 964 stance before I bought. I will look into suspension options. I was also planning to swap the D90 wheels for 17 inch cup wheels but not so sure now...

Cieran - I’m not an apologist for SCM and have no vested interest here but it is unfair I think to say that the lack of a response on an internet argument indicates guilt

Hope the car is as good as it looks and seems to be. Have I missed part of the debate that you are referring to above? I can't see any reference to ride height on the thread, not comments that Cieran has made. PMs by any chance?

To be fair, while it might be entertaining if John Hawkins were to debate publicly, I wouldn't expect him to do so.

The point I was trying to make is that he certainly hasn't used any formal means to try and stop me from saying what I've been saying. If I were in his shoes and had customer spreading untrue or unfair or simply biased and unreasonable comments on a public forum I think I'd be coming down like a ton of bricks on that said customer.

Short of offering ridiculous terms (effectively bring the car back to Specialist Cars of Malton and they'll prepare an estimate of time and cost to rectify their own shoddy work) I've not heard from their solicitors.

To the person who asked what was the background to this, there are relatively few posts to go back over on this thread if you want to find the back story. I published a thread on the 911UK forum (with consent from moderators there) and I await a response from moderators on this forum for permission to publish here and I don't wish to offend forum rules by doing so without permission or first having my story vetted.

My point on ride height was that I was warned that most of the 964s around now will have had suspension work done as they tend to sit high as standard. I wanted a completely standard car and the ride height when i finally saw it (combined with 16 inch wheels) did surprise me. No problem - just cosmetics. Thinking therefore of suspension options - but I must admit that the looks are growing on me.
