Fuel tank

Post by GonzoBard »

I’m planning to replace the fuel tank in my ‘66 car. I assume the new tank will come painted black - will it want any further painting or protection before installation?

There was a 68 tank for sale on here not too long ago. Seemed a decent one at a good price.

Paint wise, some sort of rubberised stone chip would be a good idea. Especially underneath.

Gravitex works well and others talk of 3m or wurth.

Colour is another matter.

Ah, good point, I had assumed it would be black, as in my car currently. Thanks.

There are places that will clean and coat your existing tank for you. If you look on the restoration thread I think there are some examples of people having a go themselves as well.

I used the POR 15 kit on my tank about 10 years ago, it worked brilliantly, no issues at all since then.

I hadn’t considered having my existing tank repaired. At about £230 for a new tank plus £60 ish for a fitting kit I had thought it as well to buy new. I shall investigate a repair - it isn’t really something I’d want to try myself.

What is the problem?

You are right, there is no real problem with sealing an existing tank. However, if I install a new tank it should see the car through at least the remainder of my ownership and I shouldn’t need to touch it ever again. It feels like the right course of action.
