Rust Repair Panels

Post by Tony Brooks »

I need to do some work on the front wings of my 1965 911. Ideally I would like to source a repair panel on the bottom rear section i.e. to cut out the old and weld in the new - the wing overall is in quite good condition other than the bottom 3/4 inches.

The only site I have discovered so far that seems to stock these is http://www.alfaparts.net/911.htm - has anyone else any suggestions?

Hello, Tony.

Normally this is done with two hand made repair sections...quite a simple bit of metal bashing....

The repair is rather difficult to do well, the wing must come off to get at the double skin and once you look inside it you will find plenty rusted bits..the doubled over seam is also spotted to make opening it very awkward..

The best reapir is to remove the double skin portion and reattach it, after repairing both inner and outer skin.

Quite a lot of work in fact, but good old wings are now getting scarce and its just about cost effective I think.

Kind regards
David

What like this?

Image

This is my tame Prodrive fabricator trying it for size after he made it up a few years ago from nothing but a skeletal outline of rust! It had all but disappeared under the sill finisher. As David said it looks difficult but it is only single curvature with a flange so within the capabilites of a reasonably handy sheety. Skim of filler over the final weld and job done! It only took him one lunchtime to make, and that included cutting the bottom of the old wing off!

Certainly much cheaper than a new wing. :)

Hello, Jonny.

its the bit wot gets forgot!

The front wing bolts along the back with , IIRC six fastenings, to the dirt shield plate welded to the inner wing.

The part of the wing which adhoins this dust shield is folded back to meet the extreme rear edge of the wing proper, where it is enfolded and spotted..

So there is a space of no more than 1/4 inch between the two.

When tohe outer sking isrusty, so is the inner skin..this is what makes the pukka repair difficult.

Kind regards
David
