My First Rally.....

First rally Darren........spill

I built my orange car in the style of an early 70's sports purpose 911 which included the fitting of a Halda Twin Master, Heuer Rally Set and Butler lamp etc.......with such items fitted a question I've been asked in the past is if I 'do any rallying?' .......



.....never wanting to admit that anything on my car is puely for show I decided I needed to enter an event 'one day'.......so when attending the TR Register track day at Castle Combe I met a rally driving TR4 owner who recommended the Hero Challenge.....

It's nothing too grueling and a fairly tame regularity aimed at a novice like me by looks of things but should still be a lot of fun.........rather than using more modern rally equipment like electronic Brantz trip gauges etc. I'll be doing this the old school way using my serviced and calibrated Halda and Heuer clocks which probably puts me at a disadvantage although I'm expecting to roll home last anyway!

Any tips or advice from the seasoned Pro's on here would be much appreciated?

Good luck Darren. You couldn’t make a worse attempt than the 8 celebrities rallying in Saigon. You know your car is well prepared.

Have you a Navigator or are you flying Solo?

It's all down to the navigator.
Just do as he/she says. You only have to twiddle the steering wheel!

I did the Coppa d'Europa (five countries in three or four days) in 2007 as a navigator in a 914/6 using old mechanical Haldas and we did OK, finishing in the top half of a large field. All was good except for the first morning when I turned over two pages of the route book at once and wondered why we couldn't find the second special stage...

Looks like there may be the odd speed test as well, usually held in a large open area with letter marked pylons setting out the route. You do them “blind”, ie you don’t get to walk the course and the navigator shouts out the instructions as you go. The big hint here is to make sure you do the right route as the penalties for going wrong are much more than the extra seconds you take.

I'm fortunate to have engaged the services of a successful pro Porsche race driver to act as my Navigator, admittedly his true forte is as a skilled circuit driver although I'm sure his motor sport knowledge and competitive instincts will add much to the team......

.....I just hope he can read a map!

Advice? Don't get fooled into following other cars – too often they're wrong and lead you astray...

In the regularities, concentrate on the navigation, don’t get hung up on trying to be second perfect on the timings, you’ll lose more points by getting lost.

Good lucky with the adventure. Johnny Graham and myself did a night event in his 356 many years ago and we really enjoyed it. Wasn't a proper rally but good fun all the same!
