Just watched it on iPlayer - really enjoyed it. The racist comments appeared to be so totally at odds with basically the rest of his life and seemed to come at a time when he was on the road to self destruction. Not excusing it, but knowing that episode was coming it really struck me how weirdly against the rest of his life that episode was.

As to whether the bit on his son’s death was mawkish. Dunno. Hard to think of anything much more tragic than losing a child.

He seems to have had plenty of trouble in his life - hope he’s found some peace now - he seems to have.

I always thought the expression ‘Clapton is God’ was a refrerance to his guitar playing, but then having had the misfortune to meet him once, I found he thought he actually was.
cheers, Mike.

Ditto Vic - thought there might have been an explanation in the commentary

Also surprised how little reference there was to his friendship with Pete Townsend - especially as Townsend organised a concert (the Rainbow concert - which I was at) in an attempt to lure Clapton out of 'hibernation' ...

I still have some of my old programmes/membership cards from 'back then' - 7/6 must have been the going rate for John Mayall - same price at the Marquee :

Zoot money played the wine bar I worked in in the 80s - retro tour. Also had Long John Baldry and Georgie Fame several times

I saw Georgie Fame in a small jazz/blues club in Kensington a couple of years ago (saw him lots in the '60's including several times at the Flamingo) & he was excellent - luckily the club was dark enough not to be able to see the audience !!
