Tomtom unit or app on phone

Post by jb »

My tomtom go750 says that it cannot be updated as it is too old. This was when I tried to renew my live services subscription which would have given me real time traffic routing and speed camera warnings

I tried using google maps back from cornwall last week and it works fine but doesn't give me speed camera warnings and I have also come to rely on the TomTom telling me the speed limit and how fast I am going

What do people use?
I could buy another TomTom but a few years ago many people were using a tomtom app.
What is it best to get ?

Waze

Quality app, has cameras, does live route planning based on traffic, show speed limits - give it a try

From what I understand it doesn’t download maps so will chew your data plan unless you plan the route whilst connected (to McWifi or similar!) then don’t close the app.

True - but I use it all the time (and do a lot of miles) and to be honest never have an issue with my data - I'm on a big plan though

I swap between Tomtom Go on the iPhone, Apple Maps and Google Maps. No particular benefit to either apart from low data usage on Tomtom. I used about 300 Mb each on the maps, but I have a 30Gb plan 8)

Soon find out ... I have the old Tom Tom on my phone as back up.... Waze I’m hoping is going to be as useful as it is in the U.K. for speed traps etc

If I am doing a longer trip (Wales, France, Alps etc) , I usually have a TomTom and Waze as the coverage / reception goes quite frequently. I oreplan the route on my TomTom and check Waze if behind schedule or need to re-route. Waze has a nasty habit of including a few dirt tracks on the quickest route which are also a bit of a pain.

JB - I have an older TomTom with the Euro maps loaded of you want to borrow it as a back up for CLM. Can check it works if of interest.

My Garmin was pinpoint accurate for CLM ‘16. Plus an independant digital speed read out is of benefit as car speedos tend to read a tad slow

Thank you all for your replies. I have downloaded TomTom go and waze but am struggling with 3G at the moment as my broadband has been down for a couple of days (Virgin) but I will download the associated maps when broadband returns.

Thanks for the offer Feroz however I cannot come to CLM this time also I think my son may have an old one that I could use however I am leaning towards an iPhone app as being easier provided I get all the features I am used to having. Hope you all have a great time at CLM as I am sure you will.

As Tom Tom has served you well before, buy another?
Tom Tom seems a great simple clear product that simply works, or at least my ancient one does.

For all long trips I use the wife, I swear she maps for Tom Tom, instinct like a homing pigeon.
She will never use sat nav, maps only.
