Best DIY Carpet adhesive?

Post by 911hillclimber »

I'll soon be re-installing my old carpets in the 911. in 1989 I EVOSTIK'd the lot in and it took a lot to get it out as a result. Good stuff then, not sure now (environmental issues must have changed the formula).

The carpet will go over the fresh bitumen type sheet sound deadening all over the inside of the car, so looking for a good, hi-tac, high temp aerosol spray up to the job.

Any real world experiences out there please?
Doubt some stuff from Halfords will work well.

HI - I just use a high temp "car trim" spray adhesive - simple and easy to use - sort of thing you find on ebay. You'll need 2 or three tins I suppose?

Wore one of those out rebuilding the car in the 80's! :blackeye:

Thanks for the video link. :)
Car uses the large and heavy insert on the rear that the carpet is attached to, I'm leaving mine out.
Not much 'drying time' allowed of the spray!
Note also the actual edges of the carpet sections are not glued down.

Hi temp part is a load of marketing..

I see this a lot in the Camper world. The formula is no different.. I know this as I buy in spray glue buy the pallet load direct from Sterling who make it.
I can have printed my own company design to every tin or what ever wording I would like on there. It's funny that £1-£2 or more a tin extra for .." High Temperature " some how...works.

Maybe I'm too honest..but there you go some inside info for you of the trade..

Anything about glue is about volume used... don't skimp.

The sprays aren’t really adequate, but if you visit www.woolies-trim.co.uk site and buy a litre tin of proper high temperature adhesive, you’ll be fine. It’s easier that Evostik but similar and what trimmers use.

The EVOstik I used back then has been very robust, brush and a tin of the stuff.
It is quite cool at this time of the year, so that might affect anything I use with a high solvent content.

I have used both spray and canned adhesive bought from Martrim at Beaulieu for this job and many others for years. Inexpensive and very good. The canned stuff I find easier to use than the aerosol. Also a trimmer mate introduced me to using 2 coats of spray, spray, allow to dry, spray again, hey presto, very very stickey.

I like the idea of a brush spread to keep the stray aerosol off the carpet.
Will order something in a can tonight, sound pads going on in 5 mins after coffee..

I bought a can of this https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HEAVY-DUTY-H ... 165391928? nearly two years ago and it has been the best I have used and is still liquid.
A tip I was given by a time served upholsterer is to give your brush a haircut and keep it immersed in petrol after use, take it out, wipe it off and it's ready to use even weeks later.

Thanks, that's the same stuff as Winston's above, #1133.
5 litres is a lot of glue but a bargain at the price.

Got most of the deadening pads in the rear of the car. irritating job, but broken the back of it now.

Not long completed the restoration of my 356, needed to install carpets and trim to finish things off, being mean and cheap shite I used Screwfix 'no nonsense contact spray' buy 3 x 500ml cans and it's £2.85 a can. It's real good stuff and if you have to peel the material back to run a wire or whatever it still sticks.
