As it happens I presented it to a police station near Park Gate on my way to work.

I can't believe we have got this far without pointing out that in the UK it's impossible to even have a driving license

I think it's actually an offence (offense?) not to produce your docs when asked, but the HORT/1 gets round it.

Only carry any docs with me when going abroad. Driving license in my wallet always in my pocket, other than that try to make sure I never have anything in the car with my name and address on it

Not sure its a offence to not produce your license over here when stopped, dont they just ask you for proof of ID.

I think it's one of those things which is an offence, but has a statutory defence of producing within 7 days.

Strikes me none of us know the Law, or every interpretation, or regional instruction.
What a mess!
Just keep your license on you in the UK and as just said, the computers know the rest.

That way you are always covered.

In the abroad sense, add a copy of the Insurance document.

Do the EU countries have access to DVLA data roadside?

Eire has access to DVLA as they can follow up if you don’t pay on the automatic toll on the Dublin ring road, M50. NI drivers can get speeding points, and as is now all administered by Swansea ( we used to have our own office in Coleraine) you might find that GB residents may also be victims of this. But I am happy to be corrected on this.
Cheers

In theory we can now get chased for European speed cameras if triggered in our own cars which is a pain in the arse ... Not heard of anyone getting done yet ( ignoring the hire car speed tickets ) ....

You do realise that Britain opted out of the shared number plates with Europe. So yes while you will be ok with a static camera, as I am getting flashed driving my EU car in the UK. Plus if they steal your car it won't be tracked within Europe as it is in the UK until a criminal report is done.

Carrying your driving license in your car

That opt out has now been pulled. We now have to share if requested.

Does appear to be a one way thing at the moment though

The police can stop a vehicle for any reason. If they ask you to stop, you should always pull over when it’s safe to do so.You’re breaking the law if you don’t.

If you’re stopped, the police can ask to see your:

driving licence
insurance certificate
MOT certificate
If you don’t have these documents with you, you have 7 days to take them to a police station. You’re breaking the law if you don’t show the requested documents within 7 days.

As I said earlier, the non production of the licence when asked is when the offence is committed. The production within 7 days is a statutory defence. And even then it's "as soon as reasonably practical".
