Terrot MT1 Motorcycle restoration project

I have a tiny
Peugeot Bima moped, 1952 and I have it UK registered in my shed.
It will be an oily rag job, new tyres and tubes, new cables and fresh brake shoes.
Engine looks good, a 50cc 2 stroke, friction drive to the rear tyre.
Should be easy...
No tax, no MoT

But she is a Terrot girl about to move to another bigger French bike...

Maybe a Sub 10 bhp club would be in order!
My Honda lawn mower has a more powerful engine than the Terrot and Bima added...

Going to spend some quality time on the Terrot this week coming, hope to sort the details of the carb out and get it off the build bench and see if it actually moves.

Here I go again!

No matter what I do the bike with the new 'instant starting' carb on will not now start at all.

I have done nothing to anything but use more fuel laced with 2 stroke oil just as used last time.
Not given up just yet, but soooo close to the thing going in next doors skip and moving on.

However, got the bike into the garage this afternoon.

Third hand / kick start and it fired and ran for ages!
Head got good and warm, carb adjuster screws did nothing mind, so that is not a good sign, but the twist throttle sort of worked.
Lots yet to do to get it working.
Wonder why the original carb wont work?

Might have another go at that too.

To make myself feel better about tit, fitted the re-worked sprocket (original splined hub, new chain wheel) and the new chain which fitted link perfect to length.
That alone made it look so much more like a bike!
Added the 'Terrot' transfers (NOS) in 6 pieces as they cracked, but all ok.

Be putting a For Sale sticker on it soon, just in time as a Xmas pressie for the one you love (or hate!)

Now I'm out of re-hab about this bike, thought I would have another go at it.
With the big Chinese carb on, finally got it to run at a steady fast rpm. The tick-over screw does nothing to the RPM so the slide must be too high. However, the lights certainly work!
The lights are on like it or not with this magneto, so a good bright yellow 6V headlamp and a startlingly bright tail light.

The ONLY thing that stops this bike being sold is that it does not start, all the rest is done.
Last hurdle.

Put the original carb back on.
Raised the needle to the top (richer), closed the choke and the thing nearly ran continuously.
This is the first time the carb has fired/run for me ever.

Getting closer to the last hurdle.
I'm going to persevere a bit more with the stock carb and see if I can crack the bas!%ard.

If not, then back to the Delorto copy and see if I can refine it to run right.

That's a good question.

As it stands it owes me £1800 ish, purchase price of £1000, all the new bits must be £800, wife will have a better idea..

Running, about £2000, but I think this is a nice change to the BSA Bantams you see everywhere at every car show in the UK, so maybe a touch more.

Fully UK registered too!

When running, it will be for sale, I have no intention of keeping it.

After a lot of trying and changing choke and throttle position the bike started. (big Chinese Carb on).
Even odder it responded to opening and closing the twist grip and ran for a good minute or longer. First time this has happened!

The engine got really hot, disconcertingly so with the down pipe a dull purple!

I stopped the engine.

This might signify the carb is far too weak.
IIRC when a 2 stroke down tube starts to colour it is too weak.
If this is so, then maybe this is why it is so hard to start?

Found another carb on ebay.fr but for 125 Euro. Looks like it has been in a shed for a long time, but I need to progress somehow!

Sounds like it’s horribly retarded to me, or the exhaust is blocked. I don’t think it would run if it’s too weak.

Timing spec is for the piston to be set 5mm BTDC measured off the crown of the piston.
I think this is 28 deg btdc.
The ignition is set this way at the moment.
At 5mm back, the flywheel and static marks are aligned.

I would have thought 2mm was enough?

Something is still very wrong on this thing.

I've tried it at 2mm but that was before the mag was re magnetised.
Out all day tomorrow, will try We'd.
