i'm with KS I think this will start way easier with a bump but obviously you're bump-less until the sprocket reappears!

Having spent a nice day out in Shropshire in the Boxster today, and all full of lurrve I choked the bike's carb, gently turned it over a bit and stabbed the kick start down by hand ( I now have developed Popeye arms) and the bloody thing only ran for 5 seconds sounding as sweet as a 2 stroke could ever be!

It stopped because there was little fuel in the carb bowl, evaporation overnight I suppose.
But, it ran and sounded great.
Would not start again, I suspect a flooded plug.

I have been running all these trials with neat fuel, no oil added, so pleased it only ran for that time. So pleased the garage smells of carbon monoxide instead of hydrocarbons!

First time it has ever run like that for me. Have I got the French retreating?

Sounds like you have got it sorted. When the sprocket and chain are fitted just bump start it.
But now go out and get a bottle of wine and celebrate - 5 seconds is enough to assume it is fixed.

Have to be a small bottle of Cobra, wine not allowed until, Fri, Sat, Sun due to middle age spread...

Yes, 5 secs is a good run. Need to get the balance of the mixture now. difficult as there is NO adjustment on the carb except the main jet size, no mixture control at all.
This could be the next task as there are no parts unless AMAL in the UK can help.

Maybe you adjust the choke plate to partly cover the inlet of the carb to richen it?

Is it better to try and get t running on the new carb now you know everything else is ok?
Might be easier / better from a spares perspective to do it that way..

Yes, same occurred to me.
The carb was a cheap experiment and is a bit small, but I'm tempted to buy a 21 mm Dellorto for £40 which is the right size and has some adjustment and is new.
Current one deserves another try, so easy to swop it over.

Found another carb from China, 19mm choke, same size as he original and suitable for up to 125cc 2 stroke according to the seller. £10.
It is flange mounted, but easy to make an adaptor to suit the inlet spigot on the head. It has mixture adjustment.
Have to wait 2 weeks for it to arrive, but off to SPA soon so a rest from the bike and the 911 restoration which has to start when I'm back!

The larger Chinese carb arrived yesterday, and a little modern beauty it is too!
Made a simple adaptor to fit the flange on the carb to the inlet on the engine, added some fuel and put the choke on FULL.

Pushed the kick start down hard as ever and it instantly RAN!! And for 10 seconds until I closed the choke too far.
Repeated it the start and it ran and ran and ran....had to stop it by putting my hand over the inlet and flooding the engine.

AMAZING!
So, with this serious progress for 15 $ I need to tidy the adaptor flange, and get the throttle to open and close correctly etc and fit the silencer and see if I can tune it.

Also, with the assistance of Chambrier I have a new output sprocket, excellent customer service from Chambrier, very impressed.
Onwards and upwards!

AND it was made in 1950 and now MODIFIED, so free of TAX and MoT and any other tat the DVLA can muster, spin on it DVLA.

It looks a bit big on the engine, the other carb was 'to scale' but this works!
I plan to find on ebay a large dia thin pancake filter off an old bike with suitable patina and old design and hope it will 'hide' it a bit.
Plan B is to fiddle with the other smaller, but new, carb to see if I can get more fuel through it and it might be a neater job.

Now I'm not doing the 911 this winter I have some time on my hands to finish this little blighter and get it sold.

I have a short ram pipe with a chrome ish wire gauze on the end if you want it, may have been from a Frogeye 1-1/8 carb??
