The plan for this car was always to maintain it rather than restore it - its a survivor car and never been the subject of a full restoration. Yes there have been some "period" repairs but the car is original to all extent. The issue with keeping its originality means that I prefer to continue to repair rather than replace - this takes much more work and we endeavor to retain as much of the original car. The brief prior to paint was always to repair any metalwork - some up dates below.

Drivers side sill never looked right and on inspection full of filler from one of the "period" repairs - once removed the inner sill was intact and in great condition as was the heater tube, a very small hole in the original kidney bowl that just needs attention. The jacking point was past it's best and the lower point of the jacking receiver needed repaired - deciding just to repair the bottom section rather than repair the whole part. The wing support panel was replace or repaired previously so needs to come off and placed rearward to line up with the front of the sill.

Similar story with the drivers side door - the lower part of the skin was porous as was the bottom rail - while both could have been rust treated IMO its better to replace and repair the corroded areas, so new lower sections were fabricated and work in progress to make good. Regarding the drain holes in the door frame Porsche drilled these slightly above the radius of the door frame meaning there was a water trap - we'll lower these drilling slightly into the vertical part as well as the horizontal to improve draining.

Fit up showing new sill and lower door repair in place - looks much better than the first pic. Obviously some fettling required but looks like a proper job now.

Drivers side coming close to finish with the B post, sill, front fender support all repaired and welded back in again, same for rear panel where it meets the sill. Gaps getting better and Johnny says another day fetteling around the lower radius, some shaping of the new lower door skin and this side will be finished. Yes I know more work than I thought but we've all been there......needs to be done right. I'm busting to get the car in (more) paint and back to allow the internal refit but has to be right.





Now a little work on the scuttle where the metal is not as solid as I want - again better to cut out and replace rather than just cover up. Hopefully this can be repaired next week. Other side seems OK but will do this first.



Also getting my IDS carbs back tomorrow from a quick rebuild.

I'm going to try to just blow it in - yes I know it may be easier to repaint but that's not what I want. Too much i.e. the interior - new carpets - headlining - recovered dash top - will make it look new so trying my best just to do as little as poss. The problem has been bad previous repairs - poor workmanship, some areas of porous metal- can't be 'avin it - and it's held us back but can't paint over crap metal. Really hope to have it in paint in Sept. then back to my garage for me to finish off. Should have more posts in the next couple of weeks and other repairs on the pass side are close to a finish but no point in posting until then.

Weber 40 IDS are now back with me fully refurbished and ready to go. From what I understand these rare IDS carbs were only found on the 67S & 68S

Been busy - nothing new in that but a huge push to get the car painted over the Christmas hols. Areas under torsion bar mounts in primer both sides and inner wheel arch areas finished.





As you'd expect we keep finding areas needing attention. Lower rear quarter panel lip is badly pitted and a hole in the corner of the panel, so will cut out and replace.



So repair now done just to re-weld on the support bracket mount.

While Johnny was working on the car I tackled the inside of engine lid with paint stripper, probably 6 layers of paint and many heat cycles had destroyed the finish so back to the metal/original primer, then a coat of fresh primer to leave ready for paint. Many hours of work - lid is original to the car - has the numbers stamped in the usual place - no corrosion and really minimal surface rust. The outer paint will stay as is or with a fresh coat to tidy up.

i love this thread and this car so much - the fact you're recommissioning it rather than a "back to factory" restoration is fantastic!

I told you - we're pushing hard, just got pics from todays work with the engine compartment, inner wings and floor now coated in stone chip. Expect to put the front and rear suspension in over the next couple of days before Santa takes it to the paint shop Elves....

Rear parcel shelf from engine compartment now with stone chip - still the orignal metal but had to replace and repair the demister tube holes, also a small area of corrosion along with some holes to weld/fill from previous accessory mounting - all in all remarkable condition for 50 years old.

Have been looking at and using different ones including Wurth - will find out more this evening when at Johnny's
