Stereo installation

Post by timwatsham »

How have you guys installed stereos to your 911s?

I've an original Blaupunt Frankfurt in mine at the moment which doesn't even switch on, and god knows what condition the speakers are in. So my thoughts have turned to putting in a decent CD unit and hopefully 4 speakers to liven up some of the motorway journeys which are ahead of me (I know the engine should be music enough, but I'll find myself leaning towards my daily driver with its good stereo & air con if I don't have distractions for the longer journeys (plus my girlfriend gets bored)).

I don't really want to cut into anything, and I've got RS door cards, so there are no pockets to put them in up front, so I'm a little stumped as to what to do. I had a personal CD player and little speakers in my last one which helped on the journeys on the continent, but it was really pretty awful...

I've heard about these under dash units, but no-one seems to rate them particularly highly...

Any thoughts or advice?

Hi,

Seems like a shame not to keep the original Blupunkt radio in your classic Porsche. Have you thought of using a small FM transmitter to play music from a portable music player through your car radio? You can buy the transmitter for about £10 and it plugs into the cigarette lighter (for power) and the earphone socket of your music player.

It may be quite easy to fix the radio problem, it could just be a bad connection somewhere. Power is fed to it from the ignition switch which should be easy to trace.

Cheers,
Chris

tim take a look at my car in the members gallery, I've got an under dash speaker holder from the states so you don't need to cut up your door cards... MD player and Ipod in the glove box, blanked out the radio all together so to the casual observer (or yoof) looks like there's no stereo at all

I thought about gutting an old style radio and putting a decent amplifier unit behind the facia, volume, on off etc on the original spindles, and fit a 3.5mm jack plug to plug into an Ipod/MP3 player minidisc hidden in the glove box (Removeable). Just an idea at the minute though. You'd need stereo speakers hidden like Luke's are or in the door cards perhaps, or rear parcel shelf perhaps...

Good question..

Where do you hide the amp / disc changer?

Mine is under the bonnet to the right of the smugglers box - in fact it is half screwed down to the lid of the smugglers box so I can't open it

I think it's a pretty poor place to have it and want to move it.. any ideas?

The head unit is slung under the centre dash , leaving the original radio in place. (don't think it works)

Anybody up on incar hifi - I'm looking for an in car hardrive mp3 player but not an ipod one.. does anyone know of any?

Hmm, might have to look at the under-dash unit you've got Luke. I spoke to Alan & Nick about it a couple of weeks ago when I picked the car up, but neither of them seemed to rave about it. What's the sound quality like? How much did it work out as costing in the end?

I had been thinking about squirreling away the replacement head unit in the glove box to keep the classic looks - with lack of alarm or any protection on my car, I don't really want to attract the attention of anymore of Brixton's locals when I have the car parked at home... I really enjoy listening to the radio when I'm travelling, so I think I'd still need some kind of receiver rather than just MP3.

Really want to get the best sound quality I can, as strangely my Renault Laguna has opened my ears to decent car hi-fi (and I know that sounds strange, but it is actually amazing quality for such a cheap car!)

sound quality is fine, it's certainly not up to B&W Nautilus standards, but for a car with a loud engine and loads of wind noise its more than adequate. If you want base like the boyz in their Citroen Saxo's it might not be for you.

Cost for the speaker holder was about 90gbp (Dollar was weaker then and I skipped tax) http://moch-1.com/UNDERDASH.htm

If you want an audiophile experience you may need to go the route of getting some custome boxes made and inserted in the rear footwells

I was interested in this. Figured out how to fit the headset in the glovebox no problem, but didn't know where to put the speakers. Remember seeing Luke put them under his dash - which seems like a good option.

Just had a look at the link - the 65-68 is about 100dollars more expensive. Any idea why?

Luke, looks like a good option - for some reason I had in my head that they cost £250... At £100 that is a much better buy...

Now, how did you save the tax? And which to go for? My car had Air con originally, but the unit was taken out, so its now a non-air con, but I wonder whether the fixings will be right.

I goes I could get a non-air con version and always advertise it on her if it doesn't fit!

there are no fixings per se you kind of clip it into place (it rests on the underlip of the knee pad and the little tab that stick out near the footwell on the passenger side), there is one screw that you self tap into the metal surrounding the steering column on the dirvers side.

sounds like non-aircon would fit your car Tim

as for why the 68 version is more expensive, my gues would be he makes fewer if them?

I wonder if the 69 would fit on a 68? He must make different one's for a reason but maybe a little bit of cutting would do the trick?
