Beautiful, you've got to love the black look interior. What will you do with the door side and latch panels, black or body colour?
cheers, Mike.

That would be nice Martin. It's been over 10 years since i have driven an early 911. I have resisted the temptation until mine is ready.

Richard, the Black is a formula that the painter custom made by adding matting agent until we got to something i was happy with. It has slightly more sheen than the Wurth satin Black. I will also be using it on the front and rear bumpers.

Darren, the formula you kindly helped with came in as a runner up. I have yet to see the Yellow in the flesh so i don't know the manufacturer at the moment.

Mike, I will only paint the top of the inner sill in the satin Black as it provides a natural line for the Black band that is painted along the side of the car.

Dave,
the Helgelb ( yellow) is manufactured by ICI.

Great research and fabulous attention to detail.
It will be interesting to see how the yellow pops with the white undercoat.
Loving the black.

Regards
Mike

Darren, ICI does produce a lot of paint but "half the world's paint" is something of an exaggeration. A comment influenced no doubt by a Eurocentric view of the world. Yes it is Nexa 2K mixed to an original paint sample ........and applied with a lambs wool roller for Dulux aficionados.

PPG Nexa is a great product, we use this often and have for various cars we've painted.....I advised Dave to stick with an original formulation he liked and not be tempted to start tinting, a recipe for future headaches imo.

Might have been a slight exaggeration regarding ICI but when you look closely they are behind an awful lot of brands!

Paint and interior looks fantastic, congrats.

Cheers,

As far as can be ascertained Helgelb was a Lesonal formulation used by Porsche. Lesonal still exists as a brand owned by Akzo and the colour Helgelb 117 is still listed by them. This was the first port of call. Unfortunately, the current Lesonal formulation is some way off when compared to a sample piece of bodywork from an early 911. ( the sample had been over painted orange and was carefully stripped) The reason for the colour difference probably relates to the banning of heavy metals by the EU. In the case of Helgelb likely to be cadmium and lead. Fortuitously, an old tin of Helgelb paint from Lesonal was to hand which did contain the relevant heavy metals and this proved an exact match to the body sample. I am aware of the aging process in old tins of paint and the fugitive nature of some chemicals. The choice was therefore to use a standard formulation from a manufacturer (several were tried and found wanting) or go for a bespoke mix that matched the available authentic colour references in hand. Dave is not building a hot rod but is trying to accurately replicate a known car and has gone to great lengths in his research to try and get it right. What has turned out to be a bespoke colour mix should not be a significant issue in the future provided that the formulation is known and recorded and that there is no further banning of chemical substances ( relax pot heads not those substances) which would of course impact a bespoke mix or for that matter a paint manufacturer's standard formulation.

That's interesting........from experience light yellow is a real bitch to match with a small repair we did becoming painting half a car and very difficult to blend......but as you say having a fuel flap in original colour gives you the option of painting to sample and when you're doing the whole car then why not?......

....plus I doubt Dave will ever really drive it so little risk of damage whilst he's polishing it in his garage!

Btw, two l's in Hellgelb.
